It feels like the season just started, but postseason basketball is already only a month away from beginning. With little time to find their identities, Hi-Line boys basketball teams are looking to find their groove. This past week, many Hi-Line teams continued to play well and build toward the postseason.
The week got started with a pair of games Tuesday night. At home, the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds hosted Dodson who they defeated 67-55. The Rocky Boy Stars also played Tuesday night when they lost, 78-73, to Class C Heart Butte. The Stars and Warriors played competitively throughout the night and the Stars even had a 36-35 lead at halftime. But the Warriors dominated the third quarter to take a 58-49 lead. The Stars battled in the fourth quarter but they were unable to come back.
Hi-Line basketball continued Thursday night with a District 9C matchup between the Fort Benton Longhorns and the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks. It was a tight contest, but the Longhorns prevailed for a 58-52 victory. The Longhorns had the edge early as they had a 28-24 lead. The Longhorns continued to play well in the third quarter as they extended their lead to 43-31 lead. The Hawks fought back in the fourth but Fort Benton held on for the win. Cody Evans led the Longhorns with 21 points while Blake Harmon led the Hawks with 26 points.
Competition continued with several games Friday night. The Harlem Wildcats got their week started with a 71-64 win over Glasgow. The Wildcats took an early 15-12 lead in the first quarter but the Scotties kept with them to trail 25-23 at halftime. The Wildcats and Scotties traded baskets in an explosive third quarter but Harlem held on to win the game. Teegan LeValdo led Harlem with 19 points and R.J. Ramone was right behind him with 18 points of his own.
Many games Friday night saw District 9C teams go at it. In one matchup, the Chinook Sugarbeeters defeated the North Star Knights for a 51-31 victory. In another 9C matchup, the Big Sandy Pioneers won, 74-52, over the Turner Tornadoes. The Pioneers got off to a strong start as they led, 47-22, at halftime, The Tornadoes played better in the second half but they were unable to overcome the deficit. Brayden Cline had a strong day for Big Sandy as he connected on four 3-pointers and he led the team with 26 points. Ryan Doyle led Turner with 18 points in the loss.
The Box Elder Bears got their weekend started on a strong note with a 110-68 win over the HLP Thunderbirds. The Bears set the tone with a 25-14 lead to end the first quarter. They pulled away over the rest of the game, including a 37-point third quarter. Tyrus LaMere led the Bears with 22 points while Tyshawn Shambo tried to keep the Thunderbirds in the game with his 33 points.
Most Hi-Line teams continued to compete Saturday. The Big Sandy Pioneers ended the week strong as they eked out a 47-45 win over the CJI Hawks. The Hawks took an early advantage for a 14-12 lead but the Pioneers responded to take a 25-24 halftime lead. The Hawks swung back to take a 34-31 lead but the Pioneers played strong in the fourth quarter for the win. Kody Strutz had a strong game with 26 points to lead the Pioneers. Bryce Kammerzell led the Hawks with 15 points.
The Harlem Wildcats played well Saturday in a 93-73 win over the Box Elder Bears. The Wildcats took momentum as they led, 47-39, at halftime. The Bears tried to claw their way back but an explosive fourth quarter from the Wildcats put an end to any hopes of a comeback. Both Daniel Lawrence and Ramone scored 28 points in the contest for Harlem while LaMere led the Bears with 27 points.
After their loss Friday night, the North Star Knights bounced back for a 59-48 win over the Turner Tornadoes. Turner had an early 13-12 lead but the Knights took momentum in the second quarter to take a 29-20 halftime lead. The Knights continued to control the game as they built themselves a 50-34 lead heading to the fourth quarter. The Tornadoes played better in the fourth quarter but it was not enough. Gavin Spicher led the Knights with 18 points and Doyle led Turner with 15 points.
The Chinook Sugarbeeters ended their week with a 61-25 win over the Fort Benton Longhorns.
