Havre wrestling finishes third in Montana Class A duals

The Havre High wrestling teams are looking to find their stride with the postseason coming next month. If this past weekend at the Montana Class A Duals in Lewistown were any indication, the Blue Ponies are in good position as they took third in the tournament.

“I thought we performed well. The kids wrestled hard and they did what we expected them to do,” HHS head coach Beau LaSalle said. “Took some individual losses in some places but in other places, we got some big individual wins so overall it was a good weekend.”

The Ponies started the tournament with pool play Friday. The Ponies won their first dual, 60-16, against Hamilton. Matthew Lemer, Colter Soloman and Carson Harris won the first three matches of the dual by forfeit. Wrestling at the 138 pounds, Tristan Stygles picked up a win as he pinned Joey Taylor 23 seconds into the match. Reinhard Bold and Riley Pleninger then won matches by forfeit.

At 160 pounds, Kendall Pleninger pinned Carter Morgan 1:12 into the match. HHS senior Orion Thivierge continued his strong season as he won by pin 1:29 into his match against Noah Guisinger. At 182 pounds, Kale VanCampen won by pin 3:26 into the match against Derrick Saltzman. Randy Tommerup pinned Cadogan Wheat 1:05 into their match at 205 pounds.

The Ponies continued pool play with a 48-12 win in their dual against East Helena. At 132 pounds, Jacob Kunz pinned Alex Burkhart 12 seconds into the match and Stygles won his match by forfeit. Wrestling at 145 pounds, Bold won with a pin 59 seconds into his match against Colter DeYoung.

At 152 and 170 pounds, the teams had a double forfeit. Kendall Pleninger, Pierce Caplette and VanCampen then won their matches by forfeit to stretch the lead for the Ponies. At 103 pounds, there was another double forfeit between the teams. Lemer then won by forfeit for the second time Friday. At 126 pounds, Harris won by pin 3:14 into his match against Sonny Silverthorne.

In their next dual, the Ponies won, 47-24, over Livingston/Sweet Grass Co. Riley Pleninger won by pin 36 seconds into his match against Taw Seeman. Kendall Pleninger won another match for the Ponies with a pin 34 seconds into the match against Charlie Seeman. Thivierge won by pin 1:20 into this match against Tucker Shepardson.

Caplette won, 16-1, for a technical fall over Zane Cox. Wrestling at 285 pounds, Tommerup won by pin 5:02 into his match against Lyom Bullard. Livingston’s Lemer then won a match by forfeit and Solomon won by pin 1:45 into his match against Oscar Toulouse. Stygles capped off the dual with a pin 1:32 into his match against Trae DeSaveur.

The Ponies capped off pool play with a 36-28 win over Billings Central. The first win came when Stygles won by pin 1:24 into his match against Cody Hofer. Riley Pleninger picked up a win for the Ponies when he pinned Daniel Mattingly 35 seconds into their match. Kendall Pleninger also won by pin 53 seconds into his match against Braydon Peterman.

Thivierge continued to wrestle well as he won by pin 31 seconds into his match against Sam Cooper. Caplette won by pin 45 seconds into his match against Jace Schaible. At 113 pounds, Lemer won by forfeit.

On Saturday, the Ponies began the championship bracket with a 39-30 win in a dual against Ronan in the quarterfinal. Kendall Pleninger started the dual with a pin 58 seconds into his match against Brady Hout. Thivierge kept it up with a pin 4:36 into his match against Jamison Webster. VanCampen and Tommerup then won their matches by forfeit.

After Ronan won some matches, Harris won by 41 seconds into his match against Tyson Lake. Stygles won with a pin 1:31 into his match against Fortino Silva and Riley Pleninger won, 1-0, against Caleb Cheff.

In the semifinal, the Ponies lost, 35-33, in a dual against Sidney/Fairview. While the Ponies lost the dual, some Ponies did pick up wins. Tommerup won with a pin 1:17 into his match against Nathan Romo. Caplette also pinned Caleb Klienke 2:32 into their match. Lemer won his match by forfeit and Harris won, 6-3, against Deegan Caranza. Stygles won by pin 4:56 into his match against Aaron See. Thivierge won by pin 20 seconds into the match against Josh Salz.

“The kids wrestled well, we knew it was going to be a tight dual the way it matched up,” LaSalle said. “They had a few more bonus points than we did so that was a difference maker in the dual.”

In the consolation bracket, the Ponies won, 39-33, in a dual against Columbia Falls. Tommerup won by pin 24 seconds into his match against Josh Price. After Columbia Falls won some matches, Harris won by pin 5:14 into the match against Dylan Delorme. Bold then won, 9-2, against Rowdy Crump and Riley Pleninger won with a pin 1:23 into his match against Bryan Osborne.

Kendall Pleninger won by pin 1:18 into his match against Colton Hogan. Thivierge then won by pin 1:43 into his match against Brandone Role. VanCampen won with a pin against Tucker Gonzalez 54 seconds into the match.

“We had a bit of a hangover from the loss as we turned around and wrestled right away but the kids responded well and they got through that one,” LaSalle said about the dual against Columbia Falls.

In the third-place dual, Havre defeated Laurel 49-24. At 285 pounds, Caplette won by pin 35 seconds into the match against Brody Vandyke. Lemer then won by forfeit and Harris won by pin 17 seconds into his match against Owen Tillman. After Laurel won some matches, Stygles continued his strong weekend with a pin 2:25 into his match against Kade Wersland.

Bold then pinned Aden Windler 1:21 into the match and Riley Pleninger won by pin 3:37 into his match against Owen Younger. Thivierge won, 20-7, for a major decision against Camden Johnson and VanCampen won, 5-0, against Cole Younger. Tommerup won by pin 13 seconds into his match against Whitney Holds the Enemy.

“That’s how you want to end those tournaments,” LaSalle said. “Lots of big wins in that dual and the kids just came out of it and wrestled hard.”

The HHS girls wrestling team also competed in their own tournament in Lewistown over the weekend. They competed in a regular tournament format with each Pony wrestling individually in a bracket.

At 205 pounds, Aliyah Stiffarm took third in her bracket. In the quarterfinal, she won by pin 40 seconds into the match against Norah Larson from Belgrade. In the consolation semifinals, she won by pin 4:37 into her match against her teammate Clara Laird. In the third-place match, she won by pin 1:19 into the match against Matteah Jones from Bozeman.

Brooklyn Nelson placed fourth as she wrestled in the 120-pound weight class. She won by pin 5:55 into her match against Isabel Hansen from Billings Skyview. In the quarterfinal, she won by pin 2:55 into her match against Iszy McCrea from Dillon. In the consolation semifinals, she won by pin 3:47 into a rematch against Hansen.

Maleigha Fuzesy placed fourth as she wrestled at 132 pounds. In the quarterfinal, she won, 8-5, against Ariana Ellison from Miles City. In the consolation semifinals, she pinned Anne Baldwin from Gallatin 3:50 into the match. Laird also won a match with a pin 2:59 into her match against Celia Jaeger from Billings Senior High School.

With divisionals a couple weekends away and the state tournament right after that, LaSalle hopes that his wrestlers learned from this tournament that they can compete with the best in the state and are more than capable of making a run.

“The state tournament’s wide open. It’s anybody’s tournament,” LaSalle said. “There’s a lot more parity this year in Class A than there has been in the past decade so there’s five teams on any given day that could win that state tournament. I think it opened the eyes up for our kids that if we wrestle well, we’ve got a real shot.”

The Ponies will next compete in a dual on Thursday night at Glasgow.
