Hi-Line Girls BB: Box Elder, HLP return with big 9C wins

Hi-Line Girls Basketball Roundup

Another week is in the books for the Hi-Line girls basketball teams. With the postseason coming up, some are solidifying themselves in the standings while others are still trying to find a spark. Whatever kind of team they are, they still had to survive another week in Hi-Line basketball.

After some time away from the court, the Box Elder Bears made their return a strong one with a 84-34 win over the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks Wednesday. Hi-Line basketball then continued Thursday with the Big Sandy Pioneers losing, 55-54, to Denton-Geyser-Stanford.

The Pioneers had the early advantage as they led, 17-15, in the first quarter. They carried that momentum into the second quarter as they led, 30-22, at halftime. But DGS stormed back in the third quarter to take a 42-38 lead. The Pioneers responded in the fourth quarter but they could not break through for the win.

The Harlem Wildcats started the week with a 73-41 win on the road over the Rocky Boy Morning Stars. The Wildcats led, 14-5, in the first quarter and they stretched it to a 27-11 lead at halftime. The Wildcats then exploded on offense in the third quarter to pull away for the win. Taya Trottier continued her strong season with 27 points. Jourdai Coffee led Rocky Boy with 13 points.

Hi-Line basketball continued Friday. In their first game of the week, the Turner Tornadoes won, 52-44, against Dodson. In a 9C matchup, the Box Elder Bears won, 72-25, against the North Star Knights. The Bears raced out to an early 25-6 lead. The rest of the game, the Bears used their defense to close out the win. In the fourth quarter with the game already in hand, the Bears limited the Knights to only one point. Angela Gopher led Box Elder with 27 points while North Star was led by Kaytlyn Domire with her 12 points.

In another 9C matchup, the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds won, 52-32, against the Fort Benton Longhorns. HLP led 14-5 in the first quarter and stretched the lead to 27-13 at halftime. The Longhorns were unable to get things going in the second half to fight their way back into the game. Jaedyn Chandler led HLP with 21 points and Alliya Pretty Paint scored 14 for the Thunderbirds. Samantha Vielleux led Fort Benton with 11 points.

The Rocky Boy Morning Stars continued play on Friday with a 48-43 loss to Cut Bank. The Morning Stars played well early on to take a 10-8 lead in the first quarter and then a 23-17 lead at halftime. But the Wolves took momentum in the third quarter to take a 34-32 lead. The Wolves continued to play well in the fourth quarter to pull out the win. Abria Small Boy led Rocky Boy with seven points.

The week capped off with several Hi-Line games Saturday.

The Box Elder Bears continued to play well as they won, 69-21, against the Turner Tornadoes. The Bears jumped out to an early 20-5 lead and then a 40-12 lead at halftime. They then cruised to victory in the second half. Meiyah Sutherland led Box Elder with 14 points while Turner was led by Cassidy Grabofsky with eight points.

The Fort Benton Longhorns bounced back from their loss the night before with a 62-54 win against the Big Sandy Pioneers. It was a tight first half but the Longhorns led, 31-29 at halftime. The Longhorns put together some runs in the third quarter to take a 44-35 lead into the final quarter where they held on for the win. Hailee Wang led the Longhorns to victory with her 26 points. Eva Yeadon scored 10 points for Big Sandy.

In a non-conference game, the North Star Knights played tough but they ultimately lost, 48-46, to Conrad. The teams fought to a 7-7 tie in the first quarter before Conrad took a 21-19 lead at halftime. The Knights found their groove in the third quarter as they took a 37-34 lead. But Conrad controlled the fourth quarter to take the win. Domire led the Knights with 15 points in the loss.

The CJI Hawks also played a non-conference game on Saturday where they won, 69-33, against Valier. The Hawks looked to pull away early as they led, 22-5, in the first quarter. The Panthers played better in the second and third quarters but they were unable to make it a game. Jayla Ramberg led CJI with 14 points and Haddie Woods contributed 13 points in the winning effort.

The Harlem Wildcats finished their weekend with a 47-46 loss to Cut Bank. It was competitive early on as the teams fought to a 9-9 tie in the first quarter. But the Wolves took momentum in the second quarter to take a 22-13 lead into halftime. The Wildcats fought their way back in the third and fourth quarters but they were unable to pull out a win.
