Blue Pony track and field begins spring at Glasgow Invitational

The spring is finally underway for the Havre High track and field teams as they competed in the Glasgow Invitational this past Saturday. In their first meet under new head coach Kari Filius, the Blue Ponies started the season well as the boys team took first in its meet while the girls team finished seventh. However, Filius was more impressed by the individual performances of her athletes Saturday.

“We had some really good performances. I thought everybody had something positive in their performance,” Filius said. “A couple kids stood out a little bit but I thought everybody competed well and had a really good first meet.”

The HHS boys team scored 107 points to take first in its meet. Malta came in second behind them with 81 points while Glasgow took third with 79 points. The HHS girls team finished seventh in its meet with 40 points. Plentywood won the girls meet with 96 points while Savage finished second and Scobey finished third.

Filius was impressed by many Ponies to start the year. Brayden Kimberling led the way for the HHS boys team, taking first in the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints. He recorded a time of 12.06 in the 100 and a time of 25.22 in the 200.

“He did awesome. He’s really going to be a strong runner this year,” Filius said.

Caleb Tomac’s and Shane Patascil’s performances at the meet caught Filius’ attention. Tomac recorded a time of 5:01.61 to finish first in the 1,600-meter dash and he took second in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:12.75. Patascil also performed well in the sprints as he took second in the 400-meter sprint with a time of 55.99 and finished fifth in the 100 with a time of 12.36.

Several other Ponies impressed Filius in Glasgow. Kale VanCampen took second in the high jump with a distance of 38-01. Jason Wold also did well with a time of 57.92 to take fourth in the 400. Brody Henry took third in both the 800 and the 1,600. He recorded a time of 2:14.00 in the 800 and a time of 5:08.20 in the 1,600.

Brisbin Reiter took fourth in the 200 with a time of 26.13 and Zachary Monk took fourth in the javelin with a distance of 133-08. Ciaran Courtnage earned a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.79. Ryker O’Leary placed fifth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 20.07. Jacob Herring recorded a time of 47.00 to take fifth in the 300-meter hurdles.

Tate Nelson did well in the long jump with a distance of 17-05 to take sixth. Justin Awtrey finished sixth in the 400 with a time of 58.77.

The HHS boys relay teams also had strong starts to the season. In the 1,600-meter relay, the HHS team consisting of Awtrey, Tomac, Nelson and Henry took first with a time of 3:57.07. In the 400-meter relay team, the Pony team made up of Reiter, Nelson, Wold and Kimberling finished second with a time of 47.79. An HHS team of Monk, Patascil, Carson Harris and Jasper Wendland finished fourth in the 400 relay with a time of 48.52.

Filius also took note of strong performances on her girls team in Glasgow. Kaydence Reiter placed first in both the 100 and 200 at the meet. She recorded a time of 13.34 in the 100 and a time of 28.74 in the 200. Macee May had another high finish for the Ponies as she took second in the long jump with a distance of 14-07.

Hailey Gingery had a solid start to the year with strong finishes in the 800 and the 1,600. She took third in the 800 with a finish of 2:37.02 and she took sixth in the 1,600 with a time of 5:59.65.

Kyanna Jarvis did well in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.68 to take fifth. She also took sixth in the high jump with a distance of 4-08. In the long jump, Sadie Filius took fifth with a distance of 13-07. In the 400 relay, the HHS team consisting of May, Amya Custer, Carolyn Thomas and Sophie Drew took second with a finish of 55.59.

With the first meet of the season behind them, Filius has a better idea of what her athletes are capable of now. Filius believes she has a deep boys team with many strong athletes. She also believes she has a good girls team, but did not believe their conditioning was there yet to enter them all in events this past weekend. Moving forward, she hopes to get the girls team in better shape in order to compete over the rest of the spring.

“We’re easing into it and they’ll be better as we go as a team and individually they’ll be better,” Filius said about the girls team. “The boys are going to be better as we go too. They’re just so deep, we have so many boys out there and they’re all doing a good job and they’re pretty competitive.”

The HHS track and field teams will next compete in the Cal Wearly Memorial this Wednesday at the Havre Middle School Track.
