Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Tatum Hull, CJI track and field

Tatum Hull ready to make her return for the CJI track and field team

The past two seasons of track and field have been rough on Tatum Hull from Chester-Joplin-Inverness. Her sophomore season was canceled because of COVID-19 and she missed her junior year with a knee injury. Now as she suits up for her final season with the Hawks, Hull hopes to pick up from where she left off.

"(It's) my last season so I'm just trying to beat my freshman year PRs and seeing if I'm still at that build that I was freshman year," Hull said. "Just having fun, too, because it's my last run."

In track and field, Hull competes in the long jump, the triple jump, the 100-meter hurdles, the 100-meter dash and the 400 relay. This season, she has also been trying out javelin. Over the years, Hull has enjoyed triple jump the most in field events and the hurdles the most in running events. But during her high school career, Hull has enjoyed track because of the people she has gotten to meet.

"I like seeing all the kids at the meet and competing against all the great athletes," Hull said. "Making new friends is so much fun."

While she has only really gotten to compete during her freshman year, Hull demonstrated what she was capable of when she got on the track. In her first season, she qualified for state in all five events she competed in.

She and the Hawks have just started their season and they competed in the Havre Lions Invite at the Havre Middle School Track this past Friday. At the meet, Hull hit personal records in the hurdles and the javelin for this season.

Outside of track, Hull competes in volleyball and basketball for the Hawks. She also competes in club volleyball where she travels to Bozeman and Missoula for competition. Once her high school career is over, Hull is signed to run track for Montana State University Billings. While running for the Yellowjackets, she will study radiology for the first two years and then ultrasound for the next two years.

Hull will look to improve her times and distances as her senior season progresses. Hopefully, she can qualify for the state meet and end her career on a strong note after a tough few seasons. Before she moves on with the rest of the spring, the Havre Daily News got the chance to ask Hull five questions.

HDN: What's the hardest part about track?

Hull: "I would say managing things, like how hard it is on your body and just making sure you're stretched out before and after every event is very important because you could get injured quite easily. I would just say managing your body is definitely an important thing."

HDN: How do you manage being a multi-sport athlete as well as a high school student?

Hull: "Time management is definitely the big thing. Just coming home after practice and getting homework done and knowing what homework you have to do is a big thing, but it's not too bad."

HDN: Out of all the sports you compete in, which is your favorite?

Hull: "I would say track because I like how it's individual and everything's just on you. If I'd pick a team sport, probably volleyball."

HDN: Outside of sports, what do you like to do in your free time?

Hull: "I'm definitely hanging out with my friends during my senior year. I try to get as much of that in as I can. And I go out to the farm with my dad quite a bit and spend time out there a lot especially with calving season during track, and branding's coming up, too."

HDN: After college, what are your plans?

Hull: "After college, I look to join the medical workforce and just work, and I've looked into coaching a little bit just because I enjoy being around kids. I have a couple younger sisters that I like getting them into (track) like I was into it at such a young age, so we'll see how coaching takes a part in my life."
