Ponies back on the track with pair of meets this weekend

A week of inclement weather in northern Montana has forced several high school athletic programs to adjust their schedules and cancel some events. One of those programs, Havre High track and field, was unable to compete at all last week. The teams will now make up for that with the Whitewater Invitational in Malta today, as well as the Laurel/Park City Invite this Saturday.

The Blue Ponies will face a small field of teams when they compete in today's Whitewater Invitational. Through the meet, the Ponies will compete against Dodson, Frazer, Malta, Nashua, Saco, Hays-Lodge Pole, Hinsdale, Lustre Christian, Turner and Whitewater.

The Malta boys team should be a tough opponent after finishing second in the Glasgow Invitational earlier this month. The Lustre Christian boys team also had a good showing in that meet with a fifth-place finish. The Saco girls team recently placed third in the Havre Lions Invite. The Whitewater girls team had a fifth-place finish at the Glasgow Invitational earlier in the year.

The Ponies will then wrap up the weekend with their meet in Laurel. There, they will compete against a bigger field of schools including Belfry, Billings Central, Broadview-Lavina, Colstrip, Columbus, Custer-Hysham, Laurel, Lockwood, Melstone, Livingston, Park City, Red Lodge, Forsyth, Fromberg, Hardin, Hobson-Moore-Judith Gap, Huntley Project, Reed Point/Rapelje, Roberts, Roundup, Shepherd and St. Labre Catholic.

As they return to the track after nearly two weeks without competition, the Ponies hope to pick up where they left off. The HHS boys team has finished first in both of its meets so far this season while the HHS girls team is coming off a first-place finish at the Havre Lions Invite.

Many Ponies will look to continue their strong starts to the season for the Ponies. Brayden Kimberling has twice taken first in the 200-meter sprint with a personal record of 23.84. In the 100, he has taken first and third this spring with a personal best of 12.06.

Caleb Tomac has been a good long-distance runner with a pair of first-place finishes in the 1,600 with a personal best of 4:51.24. He has also placed first and second in the 800 with a personal record of 2:09.84. Brody Henry has also run well with a first-place finish in the 3,200 at the Havre Lions Invite and top three finishes in the 800 and 1,600 early this season.

Shane Patascil has run well in the 200 and 400, including a time of 54.68 in the 400 to take first in the Havre Lions Invite. The HHS boys 1,600 relay team has taken first in both its meets this season.

On the girls team, freshman Kaydance Reiter is off to a strong start in the 100 and the 200. She placed first in the 100 in both meets this season with a personal record of 13.4. She also won the 200 twice this year with a personal best of 27.63. Hailey Gingery competed well at the Havre Lions Invite with first-place finishes in the 800 and the 1,600.

The last time the Ponies competed was in the Havre Lions Invite back on April 8. After nearly two weeks without competition, they hope they can continue the success they have had at the start of this spring. The HHS track teams will start with the Whitewater Invitational today in Malta. They will then head to Laurel for the Laurel/Park City Invite Saturday.
