Cal Wearley Memorial finally returns to Havre

The Cal Wearley Memorial Track Meet is a time-honored tradition on the Hi-Line but, unfortunately, inclement weather forced it to be postponed from its initial date of April 6. After a few weeks, the Cal Wearley was finally able to take place on Tuesday at the Havre Middle School Track, where the District 9C schools as well as the Havre High track teams competed.

"We were happy with being able to get it scheduled and it ended up being a super nice day," North Star assistant coach Haylee Donoven said.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters had a great performance as a program on Tuesday. The Chinook boys team scored 64 points to place fourth in the meet while the Chinook girls team placed tenth with 34 points. Several athletes on both squads had strong performances at the meet.

Toby Niederegger placed first in the high jump with a distance of 6-02. He also took second in the 100-meter sprint with a time of 11.92 and he took fifth in the long jump with a distance of 18-11. Oliver Standiford also performed well in the high jump with a distance of 6-00 to take second. His teammate Hunter Molyneaux placed first in the long jump with a distance of 20-00.

Landen Beck ran well as he was fourth in the 1,600 with a finish of 5:11.29 and he took fifth in the 800-meter sprint with a time of 2:13.98. Levi Jensen performed well in the hurdles as he took fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.15 and he took fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a finish of 45.52. Fellow Sugarbeeter Braxton Inman placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.40.

In the shot put, Chinook's Tyler Schoen placed fourth with a distance of 41-00. In the 1,600 relay, the Chinook team of Niederegger, Inman, Molyneaux and Brenden Fetter took fourth with a time of 3:58.69. In the 400 relay, Schoen, Inman, Carson Nissen and Caden Sullivan led the Sugarbeeters to a fifth-place finish with a time of 47.38.

On the girl's side for the Sugarbeeters, Alexus Seymour had a good day. She took fourth in the 400-meter sprint with a time of 1:08.01 and she placed fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:36.17. Anna Terry also ran well as she took sixth in both the 1,600 and the 3,200. In the 1,600, she recorded a time of 6:12.28 and in the 3,200, she posted a time of 13:18.50.

Hallie Neibauer represented Chinook in the 800 where she took second with a time of 2:31.03. Neibauer, along with Seymour, Terry and Sasha Gallus, led Chinook to a sixth-place finish in the 1,600 relay with a time of 4:51.97.

The Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks also showed well on Tuesday. The CJI girls team placed sixth with 68 points while the CJI boys took seventh with 21 points.

On the CJI girls team, Tatum Hull had an excellent day. She took first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.82. She also took second in the long jump with a distance of 16-05 and she took third in the 200 with a time of 28.62. After tough sledding lately, Hull was happy to perform well at the Cal Wearley.

"I performed pretty well," Hull said. "I came off a rough meet last Saturday in Choteau so it's nice to come back and redeem myself."

In the 1,600 relay, the CJI girls team consisting of Hull, Averie Mattson, Savannah Riggin and Haddie Woods took first as they posted a finish of 55.33.

On the CJI boys team, Kyle Harmon took second in the triple jump with a distance of 40-05. He also placed third in the 100 with a time of 11.95. Braden Mattson also performed well in several events on Tuesday. He took fourth in javelin with a distance of 146-03 and he placed sixth in the long jump with a distance of 18-07.

The Fort Benton Longhorns also competed in the Cal Wearley. Their boys team performed well to score 45 points and place fifth in its meet. The girls team took 20th in its meet with eight points.

Devin Bird performed well for the Longhorns as he took first in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.12. He also placed second in the 200 with a time of 24.21 and he took second in the 400 with a finish of 53.78. Mateo Socorro also made an impact as he took second in the long jump with a distance of 19-09. Socorro also did well in the 200 where he took fourth with a time of 24.42.

The Fort Benton team of Socorro, Landis Arganbright, Nathan Dunham and Brock Grossman took third in the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:55.03. On Fort Benton's girls team, Kylynn Nack took fourth in the pole vault with a height of 7-00.

The meet's host school, North Star, also competed well on Tuesday. The boys team scored 16 points to place ninth while the girls team scored 12 points to tie for 18th in the meet. On the girls side, Rainee Watson placed third in the discus with a distance of 98-05.

In the long jump, Garrett Spicher took third with a distance of 19-04. Gavin Clawson took third in the shot put with a distance of 42-05 and Carter Campbell placed fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:12.77.

The Big Sandy boys team took 12th in its meet while the Big Sandy girls team placed 17th. Kody Strutz had a strong day as he finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 39-02.5 and he took fifth in the 200 with a time of 25.43. Eva Wagoner also ran well as she took third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.32.

The Box Elder Bears were another 9C school at Tuesday's meet. Their girls team scored 20 points to finish 16th in their meet. Meiyah Sutherland took third in the high jump with a distance of 4-10 and she placed fourth in the 100 with a time of 13.83.

Many other athletes from across the Hi-Line performed well on Tuesday. Rocky Boy's Kellen Colliflower took first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.82. Davontae Sullivan from Hays-Lodgepole tied for third in the high jump with a distance of 5-08. On Harlem's girls team, Kaitlyn Johnson took third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.31.

The home town Havre High track and field teams also had a strong showing on Tuesday. The HHS boys team scored 109 points to take first in its meet while the HHS girls team placed third with 120 points behind first-place Glasgow.

Many Blue Ponies continued their strong starts to the season. Brayden Kimberling placed first in the 100 with a time of 11.79 and he took first in the 200 with a time of 23.80. Shane Patascil took home first in the 400 with a time of 53.43. Caleb Tomac won the 800 with a time of 2:07.88. In the triple jump, Kale VanCampen took first with a distance of 40-11.

Brody Henry ran well for the Ponies as he took second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:56.97 and he took third in the 800 with a finish of 2:09.36. In the 200, Michael Emge placed third with a time of 24.34. Ryker O'Leary placed third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.43.

In the 400 relay, the Havre A team of Kimberling, Patascil, Jason Wold and Brisbin Reiter took first with a time of 45.89. In the same event, the Havre B team of O'Leary, Zachary Monk, Jasper Wendland and Carson Harrris took second with a time of 46.83. In the 1,600 relay, the Havre A team of Patascil, Henry, Tomac and Kimberling took first with a finish of 3:45.59.

The girls side also saw several strong performances. Kaydance Reiter took first in both the 100 and the 200 once again for the Ponies. She recorded a time of 13.25 in the 100 and she posted a time of 27.28.

Macee May also ran well as she placed third in the 100 with a time of 13.74. Hailey Gingery took third in the 1,600 with a time of 5:56.58. In the 1,600 relay, the HHS team of Reiter, Sadie Filius, Chloe Shennum and Kyanna Jarvis took first with a time of 4:29.31. After their performance on Tuesday, first-year HHS head Kari Filius feels confident as the Ponies trot forward.

"We did pretty well today," Filius said. "I thought everybody did well. The depth was good today. We're just taking steps toward (our meet in) Whitefish this Saturday."
