Havre track comepetes against Class A competition in Whitefish

After starting the week with a solid finish at the Cal Wearley Memorial, the Havre High track and field teams looked to keep it going with the Whitefish ARM Invitational this past Saturday. In their first significant action against other Class A schools, both HHS track teams finished fourth in the meet in Whitefish.

"We did really well," HHS head coach Kari Filius said. "A lot of our top performers did well and placed."

The HHS boys team scored 72 points to finish fourth in its meet. Bigfork won the boys meet with 151 points while Columbia Falls took second and Whitefish took third. The HHS girls team scored 71 points to take fourth in its meet. Whitefish scored 151 points to take first in that meet and Columbia Falls came in second and Bigfork came in third.

Just like all season, several Ponies had strong performances at the meet. Hailey Gingery had a strong weekend for the HHS girls team. She took first in the 1,600-meter dash with a time of 5:38.64 and she finished second in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:34.39.

Kaydance Reiter also continued her strong season as a freshman. Even though she did not place first, she took second in the 100-meter sprint with a time of 13.03 and she placed third in the 200-meter sprint with a finish of 26.74. Macee May also placed high for the Ponies with a second-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 14-10.

Kyanna Jarvis also performed well over the weekend. She took third in the high jump with a distance of 4-10 and she placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.19.

Several Ponies performed well in the 300-meter hurdles. Sadie Filius took fourth in the event with a time of 52.82. Just behind her in fifth was her teammate Emma Gillen who recorded a time of 52.89.

Several other Ponies had strong finishes Saturday. In the 3,200, Jayla Meldrum took fifth with a time of 14:08.15. In the 400, Chloe Shennum came in sixth with a time of 1:09.38.

The HHS girl relay teams also ran well. In the 400 relay, the team of Fillius, May, Reiter and Jarvis came in fourth with a time of 52.86. In the 1,600 relay, the team of Filius, Jarvis, Reiter and Carolyn Thomas took second with a finish of 4:30.53.

The HHS boys team also saw many athletes perform well in Whitefish. Caleb Tomac continued to run well in the long distance with second-place finishes in both the 800 and the 1,600. He recorded a time of 2:05.83 in the 800 and he posted a time of 4:39.65 in the 1,600.

Shane Patascil performed well in the 400 with a time of 53.58 to finish second. In the triple jump, Kale VanCampen finished second with a distance of 41-05. Zach Monk took second in the javelin with a distance of 145-04.

Orion Thivierge took third in the triple jump with a distance of 40-03.5. In the 300-meter hurdle, Jacob Herring finished third with a time of 45.91. Brayden Kimberling took fourth in the 200 with a time of 23.72. Brody Henry also ran well for the Ponies. He took fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:07.65 and he finished sixth in the 1,600 with a time of 4:49.83.

In the 100, Brisbin Reiter recorded a time of 11.81 to finish fifth. Justin Rosgaard finished sixth in the javelin with a distance of 131-08.

As usual, the HHS boy relay teams ran well. In the 400 relay, the team of Reiter, Patascil, Kimberling and Jasper Wendland took fifth with a time of 46.17. In the 1,600 relay, the HHS team consisting of Tomac, Patascil, Trayden Riley and Shane Patascil took third with a time of 3:41.66.

With this meet now behind them, the Ponies only have a few more weeks of the regular season. With this meet being their first action against other Class A schools, there is plenty to learn that will help them down the line.

"We did see we needed to work more on some of our technical things," Filius said. "As far as strength and endurance and things like that, I think we're real close and we're right there."

The HHS track and field teams will next compete in the North/East Top 10 meet in Glasgow this Tuesday.
