Havre track teams push through the rain at the Havre Invite

This past Saturday saw heavy rain and high winds on the Hi-Line. But that did not stop the Havre High track and field teams as they hosted the Havre Invite at the Havre Middle School Track. In the small meet of only six schools, the HHS boys team took first while the HHS girls team finished second.

The Blue Ponies also used the meet as their senior day. From the girls team, the Ponies honored Amya Custer, Sadie Filius and Emma Gillen. From the boys team, Zach Monk, Orion Thivierge, Jasper Wendland, Riley Pleninger, Kaden Barkley and Justin Rosgaard were honored. With this being the last time they competed in Havre, there were plenty of emotions for the seniors.

"It's bittersweet because the sport is really important to me," Custer said. "It's sad to see it end here but I've had a lot of fun."

Many of the seniors had been through several ups and downs with the program through the years, but they cherished the experiences they made along the way.

"It's been really great," Monk said. "It's been bumpy with a lot of coaching changes but it's been great to get out here."

While this was only her first year with the Ponies, HHS head coach Kari Filius saw the seniors' impact on the program, whether they were on the track team all four years or were new additions to the program this spring.

"They just work hard every day and they compete with a smile on their faces," Kari said. "The younger kids see that and they take that same demeanor and it just makes every event that much better so I just really liked their leadership and what they showed the younger kids."

Along with the seniors, many Ponies competed hard in their final meet at home this spring. Brayden Kimberling continued his strong season as he placed first in both the 100-meter sprint and the 200-meter sprint. In the 100, he recorded a time of 10.84 and in the 200, he recorded a time of 23.69.

Caleb Tomac had another strong meet for the Ponies. In the 800, he took first with a finish of 2:23.01 and in the 1,600, he took first with a time of 4:44.78. Brody Henry also ran well in the 1,600 as he took second with a time of 4:56.96.

Many other Ponies ran well Saturday. In the 100, Brisbin Reiter took second with a time of 11.03. He also took third in the 200 with a time of 24.33. In the 200, Michael Emge placed second with a finish of 24.17. Shane Patacsil ran well in the 400 as he took second with a time of 54.9. In the 100-meter hurdles, Jacob Herring took third with a time of 47.16.

Kale VanCampen performed well in several field events. He took first in the long jump with a distance of 19-03. He also placed first in the triple jump with a distance of 40-04.5. On his senior day, Pleninger took first in the pole vault with a height of 11-06.

Ryker O'Leary had a solid showing in the long jump as he took second with a distance of 19-00.5. On his senior day, Thivierge took second in the triple jump with a distance of 39-05.

A pair of HHS boys teams performed well in the 400 relay Saturday. The team consisting of Reiter, Patacsil, Kimberling and Carson Harris took first with a time of 46.63. Another team that was made up of Monk, VanCampen, O'Leary and Wendland took second with a time of 47.50.

The HHs girls team also saw several strong performances Saturday. On her senior day, Custer took first in the 100 with a time of 14.27. Hailey Gingery also ran well with a first-place finish in the 1,600 with a time of 5:49.5. Kaydance Reiter ran well in the 100 for a time of 14.32 to take second. In the 1,600, Jayla Meldrum took second with a time of 6:22.3.

The Ponies also ran well on the hurdles. In the 100-meter hurdles, Kyanna Jarvis finished second with a time of 16.1. In the 300-meter hurdles, Sadie Filius took third with a time of 54.06.

Filius also performed well in the long jump as she took second with a distance of 14-06. Jarvis took second in the high jump with a distance of 5-00. Several Ponies performed well in the pole vault. Taylor Leeds took first in the event with a height of 7-00. Saige Knutsen finished second with a height of 6-06.

A pair of HHS girls relay teams ran well in the 400 relay. The team consisting of Custer, Carolyn Thomas, Sophie Drew and Emily Leeds took second with a time of 55.86. Another team consisting of Reiter, Gillen, Filius and Jarvis took third with a time of 56.00.

Throughout the day, the Ponies had to deal with high winds and plenty of rain. While the adverse weather negatively affected their times, Kari Filius believes competing in those conditions will toughen them up and prepare them for postseason competition.

"Running in races like that in the cold, it helps us get stronger so when we do have good weather meets, we perform and get our PRs," Filius said. "It's really good for us to compete in stuff like this, so that we can compete when it matters later in the year."

The HHS track and field teams will wrap up the regular season with the Glendive Twilight this Friday.
