KidsMAT again bringing child theater camps to region

Montana Actors' Theatre is holding its annual Kids MAT productions over the next few months and is still looking for participants in these four-day theater camps for Hi-Line youth.

Kids MAT Director Angela Pratt said the camps are for local children ages 5 to 12, and it can be a great introduction to theater.

"It is an opportunity for young students to try out theater, or get better at theater," Pratt said.

She said MAT has been able to hold these camps through the pandemic by making alterations and implementing precautions for safety and their attendance did not drop at all.

"I think people were needing to get out and be a part of stuff," she said.

She said students will spend the first three days preparing to put on their plays until the fourth day when they perform.

She said this year's play is "Happily Ever Before," a story about fairytale villains' jealousy of the heroes' happily-ever-afters and plotting to sabotage them.

Pratt said the productions have been set up in a way that will guarantee every student will have at least one major role, and they can work with younger students that may not be able to read just yet.

Pratt said the program is primarily run by interns MAT brings in from colleges and universities around the state to give them a taste of what play production is like in a professional setting, but they will have her guidance.

Pratt said she doesn't know how many students will sign up this year, but warned that spots tend to go fast, so anyone interested should sign up at https://mtactors.com/kidsmat instead of showing up the day of, which runs a higher risk of not getting in.

Pratt said they weren't able to make it to every town they normally would during the pandemic, because some had stricter safety requirements that prevented the troupe from being able to do the camps, but this year they will be in Havre, Chinook, Shelby and Harlem.

Three camps will be held in Havre with the first June 6 through 9, the second July 5 through 8, and the third from Aug. 8 to 11.

The Shelby camp will be June 20 through 23, the Harlem will be June 27 through 30 and the Chinook camp will be July 18 through 21.
