Northstars battle tough teams, rain at own jamboree

The Havre Northstars American Legion baseball club has one of the top facilities in the state of Montana. And Legion Field was on display this past weekend as the annual Havre Jamboree took center stage.

The Northstars hosted teams from Miles City, Glendive and Calgary, as well as the defending Class A state champion Gallatin Valley Outlaws from Friday night to Sunday afternoon.

Havre opened the tournament with a tough, 11-7 loss to the Miles City Mavericks on Friday night. The Mavericks scored on a double by Ryder Lee in the first inning and a single by Pierce Hollowell in the second inning. Despite the loss, the Northstars did collect 11 hits in the high-scoring affair. Unfortunately, Miles City Mavericks had 11 hits on the way to victory. In the bottom of the first inning, Havre tied things up at two when Conner McKay singled scoring one run. After Miles City scored two runs in the top of the seventh, Havre answered with two of their own. Miles City scored when Lee singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run. then answered when Kale VanCampen singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run, and Eli Cloninger lined out, driving in a run.

Miles City scored five runs in the third inning. Charlie Lang, Dylan Holmlund, Carson Hunter and Aidan Cline each drove in runs during the inning. Lee, who also homered, took the win for Miles City Mavericks. The pitcher surrendered five runs on nine hits over six innings, striking out five. Caiden Haycock threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Trenton Maloughney took the loss for Havre. He surrendered eight runs on seven hits over three innings.

Havre racked up 11 hits on the night. Theron Peterson and Brody Nanini all had multiple hits for Havre Northstars 18U. Peterson went 3-for-5 at the plate.

While Havre’s jamboree opener was a tough loss, the Northstars didn’t have to wait long for redemption. They took on the Glendive Blue Devils in a thrilling 13-10 win late Friday night. The game was tied at seven with the Northstars batting in the bottom of the sixth when Kale Vancampen drew a walk, scoring one run.

The Blue Devils got things moving in the first inning, when an error scored one run for the Glendive Blue Devils. Glendive scored three runs in the seventh inning.

Jevin Jenkins earned the victory on the hill for the Northstars. Jenkins allowed four hits and five runs over three innings, striking out four. Jenkins also paced Havre at the plate, going 2-for-4, Chason Mader threw two-thirds of an inning in relief out of the bullpen. Mader recorded the last two outs to earn the save for Havre. Cloninger, Peterson, Nanini, Maloughney, VanCampen and Kale Reno all had RBIs in the win.

The Northstars then turned their attention to a Saturday night showdown with the Gallatin Valley Outlaws, the defending state champions. In that game, the Northstars fell to the Outlaws 9-5. GVO scored seven runs in the sixth inning to take the win over Havre.

The Northstars captured the lead in the first inning. Off of a wild pitch. Havre led 3-2 after the first inning and 4-2 after two. Havre tacked on another run in the third to pad the lead before GVO explodes in the sixth.

Kale Reno took the loss for the Northstars., allowing eight hits.

The Northstars tallied eight hits. Eli Cloninger and Theron Peterson each racked up multiple hits for Havre. Cloninger went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Havre Northstars 18U in hits. Havre Northstars 18U was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Chason Mader had the most chances in the field with 12.

The Northstars also played a final game in the jamboree Sunday, but the contest was not finished before press time. Havre is also home to host the Great Falls Chargers Tuesday night in a Northern A doubleheader.
