Valley Furniture wins 14U softball championship

On Monday night at Sixth Avenue Memorial Field, the 14U softball tournament held its championship game between Valley Furniture and Montana Country Boutique. It was a back-and-forth game, but Valley Furniture pulled out the 12-11 victory to win the 14U championship.

"I'm really excited," Valley Furniture player Olivia Keller said about winning the championship game. "I'm just glad we beat that team."

Valley Furniture got the scoring started in the top of the first inning. With two runners on base, an infield single drove in a run to give Valley Furniture the lead. Another single drove in another run to push the lead to 2-0.

Valley Furniture also took advantage of several mistakes by their opponent. A dropped ball by the catcher allowed a Valley Furniture runner to score. Another pair of runners scored on a pair of wild pitches to give Valley Furniture a 5-0 lead to end the top of the first.

But Montana Country Boutique responded in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded, a runner scored on a wild pitch to get Montana Country Boutique on the scoreboard. A single then drove in another run to cut the deficit to 5-2. Another runner scored on an error.

Montana Country Boutique continued to score in the first inning. With the bases loaded, a walk drove in a run to cut the deficit to one run. A double then drove in another run to tie the game, 5-5, to end the opening inning.

In the top of the second, Valley Furniture responded to retake the lead. With the bases loaded, a runner scored on a ground ball to give Valley Furniture a 6-5 lead. A bases-loaded walk drove in another run to add onto the lead.

A single drove in another pair of runners for Valley Furniture. A base runner then scored on a wild pitch to give Valley Furniture a 10-5 lead to end the inning.

Again, Montana Country Boutique responded in the bottom of the second. After loading the bases, back-to-back wild pitches allowed a pair of runners to score to cut the deficit to 10-7.

After Valley Furniture failed to score in the top of the third, Montana Country Boutique kept the pressure up. With two runners on, an infield single drove in a run to start the inning. A bases-loaded walk and another single drove in another pair of runs to tie the game. A runner then scored on a fielder's choice to give Montana Country Boutique an 11-10 lead.

Valley Furniture headed to the top of the fourth with just one last chance to continue the game. After a batter was hit by a pitch to open the inning, back-to-back groundouts put Valley Furniture in trouble. But a clutch single drove in the run to tie the game. Three quick outs in the bottom of the fourth then forced an extra fifth inning.

After a walk to open the top of the fifth, another single drove in the runner to give Valley Furniture a 12-11 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Valley Furniture recorded two quick outs to put themselves in position to win. After a single to extend the game, a popout ended the game to give Valley Furniture the victory.

"They all dug deep and did it," Valley Furniture head coach Phil Gingery said about the comeback. "We had some ups and downs but the girls came through in the end."
