Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Ava Moomey, Skylights youth volleyball

Havre local Ava Moomey has big aspirations for her volleyball career

Before getting the season started, the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team hosted the Skylights youth volleyball camp at Armory Gymnasium Monday. Young volleyball players from across the Hi-Line went to the camp, including Ava Moomey, a Havre local who had one goal on her mind at the camp.

"(I came here) to get better and learn," Moomey said.

Throughout the camp on Monday, Moomey and other camp attendees worked on drills involving serving, setting and hitting. Along with working on her volleyball game, Moomey enjoyed working with the Skylights and meeting new people.

"(I've enjoyed) all the friends I've made and the memories I'm making," Moomey said.

MSU-N volleyball has been a fixture in Moomey's life from a young age. Along with watching the Skylights play volleyball, she also learned about the game from working with former Skylight Cassie Krueger.

Over the years, Moomey has been hard at work on her game. She believes that some of her biggest strengths in volleyball are her serving and her hitting. However, she believes she can still improve on her spiking and her footwork.

Even in her free time, athletics dominate Moomey's life. She spends most of her time on the court as she is either playing volleyball or basketball.

She is only a sixth grader, so she has a few years before she plays for the Havre High volleyball team and then another few years before hopefully college volleyball. While she continues to work on her game, the Havre Daily News got the chance to ask her five questions at the Skylights volleyball camp.

HDN: What position do you play?

Moomey: "I don't specifically play a position. I'm just kind of experimenting with what I want to play right now."

HDN: Is there any position you are leaning toward?

Moomey: "I want to be a libero but I would be fine if I was a main server or a corner hitter."

HDN: What do you look forward to about eventually playing high school volleyball?

Moomey: "Working with my team, getting to know them and playing competitively."

HDN: What do you hope to accomplish in your volleyball career?

Moomey: "Getting into college with a full ride scholarship in volleyball and probably just getting better at volleyball all around."

HDN: Between volleyball and basketball, which is your favorite sport?

Moomey: "Volleyball. It just comes naturally and I'm better at it than I am at basketball."
