Hi-Line Football Roundup: Hawks fall in shootout, Pioneers continue to dominate

This past weekend on the Hi-Line, another slate of high school football games took place. One of the most exciting games took place this past Saturday when the Chester-Joplin-Inverness six-man football team went on the road to play Denton-Geyser-Stanford-Geraldine. It ended up being a shootout that the CJI Hawks ultimately lost 46-42.

In the first quarter, the Bearcats took the lead with a 50-yard touchdown pass from Tyce Smith to Ace Becker. But the Hawks responded with Nate Nelson scoring on a two-yard touchdown run. Later in the quarter, the Hawks scored again with a 51-yard touchdown run from Nelson. But the Bearcats ended the first quarter on a strong note with Becker running it in for a six-yard score to cut the Hawks' lead to 14-12.

The teams continued to go back and forth in the second quarter. The Hawks took the lead with Nelson running it in for a three-yard score. The Bearcats then responded with Smith throwing a 25-yard touchdown pass. Smith then connected with Becker for a 23-yard touchdown throw. On the ensuing kickoff, Nelson ran it all the way for a 70-yard score to give the Hawks a 26-24 lead heading to halftime.

The Bearcats took the lead in the third quarter with Smith throwing a 48-yard score to Becker. The Hawks continued to pound the rock with touchdown runs from Braden Mattson and Nelson in the third to extend the lead. Late in the third, the Bearcats scored another touchdown to cut the Hawks' lead to 42-38.

In the fourth quarter, both offenses slowed down. After scoring multiple touchdowns in each quarter of the game so far, the Hawks were shutout in the final frame of the game. Smith then threw another touchdown to give the Bearcats the 46-42 lead, which they held onto for the victory.

The CJI offense finished the game with 542 yards of offense. The ground game had another stellar day with 451 rushing yards on 46 attempts throughout the contest. Nelson led the team with 278 yards on 27 carries. He also scored five touchdowns in the contest.

The loss dropped the CJI Hawks to 3-1 on the season. The CJI six-man football team will next play at home against Highwood this Friday.

Big Sandy 56, Power-Dutton-Brady 0

The Big Sandy six-man football team had another dominant performance this past Friday with a 56-0 home victory over Power-Dutton-Brady. The Pioneers got started early with Braydon Cline throwing a nine-yard touchdown pass to Kody Strutz in the first quarter. Later in the opening frame, Cline connected with Wylee Snapp for a 20-yard score for the Pioneers.

Minutes later, Cline found Rusty Gasvoda for a 19-yard score. With seconds left in the opening quarter, Cline connected for his fourth touchdown of the quarter when he found Strutz for a 19-yard score to make it 28-0.

Even in the second quarter, the passing game did not slow down. This time, Cline found Lane Demontiney for a 33-yard score. The Big Sandy defense then got in on the fun when Strutz intercepted a pass by the opposing quarterback and returned it all the way for a touchdown to make it 42-0.

In the third quarter, Cline connected with Demontiney for a 60-yard touchdown pass. Cline finished the game going 6-for-8 for 160 yards and six touchdowns through the air. The Pioneers scored again in the fourth with Tannin Baumman running it in from 31 yards out.

The Big Sandy offense finished the game with a total of 292 yards on offense and 158 rushing yards. It was a near perfect game for the offense as the Pioneers went 2-for-3 on third down and 1-for-1 on fourth. The Pioneers did not punt once and only had one turnover, a lost fumble, in the contest.

The Big Sandy six-man football team improved to 4-0 on the season and will next play this Saturday at home against North Star.

Bainville 60, Box Elder 26

The Box Elder six-man football team stumbled on Saturday with a 60-26 loss at home to the Bainville Bulldogs. It was a slow first quarter, but the Bulldogs were able to score to take a 6-0 lead.

The Bears got their own offense going in the second quarter, but it was not enough to keep up with the Bulldogs. By halftime, the Bears were trailing 30-12. The Bears played better defense in the third quarter and only trailed, 38-19, heading to the fourth. But the Bulldogs found their offensive momentum for 22 points in the fourth quarter to put the game away for good.

The loss dropped the Bears to 0-3 on the season. The Box Elder six-man football team will next play at home this Saturday against Power-Dutton-Brady.

Chinook 50, Harlem 28

On Friday night in Harlem, a pair of 8-man football teams from the Hi-Line faced off. In the meeting between Chinook and Harlem, the Chinook Sugarbeeters got on a roll to defeat Harlem 50-28.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters improved to 4-0 on the season and will next play at Fort Benton this Friday. The Harlem Wildcats fall to 2-2 on the season and will next play at Hays-Lodge Pole this Saturday.

Shelby 2, Hays-Lodge Pole 0

The Hays-Lodge Pole 8-man football team forfeited their contest against Shelby this past weekend. The Thunderbirds fall to 0-1 on the year and are next scheduled to play this Saturday at home against Harlem.

Belt 2, Rocky Boy 0

The Rocky Boy 8-man football team forfeited its game against Belt this past weekend. The loss dropped Rocky Boy to 0-3 on the season. Rocky Boy is next scheduled to play Sept. 30 at home against Shelby.
