Hi-Line referees finding ways through a shortage

Dave Petersen officiates a high school football game between Havre High School and Billings Central at Blue Pony Stadium last weekend. Because of a shortage of high school referees on the Hi-Line this fall, football games have had to be moved in order to be officiated.

Being a sports referee can be the most unappreciated part of athletics. When you do your job well, nobody gives you any credit. When fans think you’re doing your job poorly, that’s all you’re going to hear.

Well, another issue facing high school officiating this fall is a shortage of people to officiate the games. Several of the older officials have retired and more are set to do so in the coming years. Over the past 10 to 15 years, not enough people have become officials to replace them.
