Northern hosts rodeo at Bigger Better Barn

After several weeks on the road to start the season, the Montana State University-Northern rodeo teams hosted a rodeo at the Bigger Better Barn at the Great Northern Fairgrounds this past weekend. Collegiate teams from across the Big Sky region gathered over the weekend to compete with several riders demonstrating their skills to local rodeo fans.

At the end of the weekend, Montana State University emerged as the victor in both the men's and women's rodeos. In the men's rodeo, the Bobcats took first with a score of 495 points while Miles Community College came in second behind them. In the women's rodeo, the Bobcats finished first with 380 total points with Montana Western coming in second.

While the MSU-N rodeo teams did not win their rodeos, several Northern riders had strong performances over the weekend. In barrel racing, Brittney Bo Cox took second with an average time of 26.54. Lauren Johnson from Montana Tech took first with a time of 26.38. In goat tying, Northern's Mikenna Schauer finished fourth with an average time of 12.9 seconds. Tavy Jo Leno from Western took first in the event with an average of 11.8 seconds.

In the team roping event, Chance Story and Gavin McLean worked together to take third in the event with an average score of 22.1. Daylon Danks and Dawson Jackson from Miles Community College won the event with an average score of 14.

Many riders from across the Big Sky region showed off their skills over the weekend to Havre. Trevor Williams Kay from Western took first in bareback riding with a score of 146. In tie down roping, Jase Hunter Bustad from MSU won with an average time of 19.0 seconds.

In breakaway roping, Isabelle Fossum from MSU took first with an average of 4.6 seconds. In saddle bronc riding, Caleb Meeks won as he was the only rider to qualify with a total score of 146.

Owen Carlson from Miles Community College won the bull riding event with a total score of 134. In steer wrestling, Jaden Whitman from MSU took first with an average time of 10.9 seconds.

While he did not win any events during the weekend, MSU's Kaden Conway was named the men's all-around rider as he scored a total of 170 points in the rodeo. Leno was named the women's all-around rider with a total score of 170 points in the rodeo.

The MSU-N rodeo teams will wrap up the fall portion of their schedule with a rodeo this Friday and Saturday in Dillon hosted by Montana Western.
