Cooler temps, light snow back in area

After several warm days turned snow to slush - and caused some highway flooding over the weekend - colder temperatures have frozen that slush with some more light snow falling across this part of north-central Montana this morning.

Warmer temperatures dominated the area over the weekend - Havre had a high of 42 Saturday with it hitting 35 by 6:13 a.m. and a high Sunday of 41 with it dropping to just below freezing - 29 degrees - just before midnight.

December saw plenty of days below zero with warmer days on Christmas and New Year's Day, It had warmed up on New Year's Day, followed by a few more days with chilly temps and below-zero nights.

The last couple of weeks have varied, with some days at or near freezing and others with, again, below-zero lows, including Havre hitting minus 2 Thursday, slowing down the melting a bit.

But the warmth over the weekend saw some major softening and melting of snow and ice, putting many streets and highways into a slushy situation.

That included some flooding over U.S. Highway 2 east of Havre Sunday, with Montana Department of Transportation crews working to clear the highway.

The temperature dropped again Sunday, however, with the low in Havre hitting 22 degrees and freezing much of the slush and water.

The main concern in this region is dense fog advisories from the Rocky Mountain Front past Blaine County, with morning fog warnings in effect through Wednesday morning and tonight and Tuesday night.

A winter weather advisory warning of snow and freezing rain is in effect from Cascade and Judith Basin counties to the southwest corner of the state, in effect through this afternnon.

The forecast for Liberty, Hill, Blaine and northwest Chouteau counties this week predicts more light snow through tonight with highs this week closer to normal, in the 20s to low 30s - the normal high for Havre Jan. 15 is 28 with the normal low 7 - and lows in the teens to 20s.

It is expected to warm up a bit Saturday with highs in the 30s, but a chance of snow returns Saturday night and Sunday.
