Havre girls pull out win, Havre boys fall at Lewistown

In a set of games that were originally scheduled for before the holiday break, the Havre High basketball teams went on the road to face Lewistown on Tuesday night. The HHS girl's basketball team faced adversity but pulled out a 60-52 victory over Lewistown. Meanwhile, the HHS boy's basketball team had a strong start against Lewistown but fell behind and lost 85-51.

The night started with the HHS girl's basketball team facing off against the Golden Eagles. The Ponies started strong as they took a 4-0 lead thanks to a bucket from Lizzi Haney and some free throws from Amaya Jarvis. The Eagles responded with a 6-0 run to take a lead, but it was short lived as Avery Carlson scored to tie the game.

Over the rest of the first, the Ponies and Eagles went back and forth. A pair of free throws gave the Eagles the lead and Havre responded with a free throw from Sierra Parker and a bucket from Tierra Parker. After Lewistown took the lead again, Jarvis ended the quarter with a 3-pointer to tie the game 11-11.

The Ponies and Eagles continued to play tug of war with momentum through most of the second quarter. The Eagles took a slim advantage halfway through the quarter when four straight free throws gave the Eagles a 22-18 lead. The Ponies tried to go on a run before the end of the half, but the Eagles held a 26-23 lead heading into the break.

Looking to take control, the Ponies started the second half on a 6-2 run. Kyanna Jarvis and Sierra both scored three points during the run to help the Ponies take a 29-28 lead. After Lewistown scored to take a 30-29 lead, the Ponies went on another run with ten straight points. Ariana Gary got rolling with five points during this stretch to help the Ponies take a 39-30 lead.

The Eagles were able to slow down the Ponies and claw their way back as Havre's lead was 43-38 heading to the fourth. But the Ponies held onto momentum through most of the fourth to take a 52-44 lead into the final two minutes of the game.

With time running out, the Eagles went on a 5-0 run to cut their deficit to 52-49 with about a minute remaining. But Amaya knocked down a three in the final minute to halt the Eagles' momentum. Over the rest of the game, the Ponies knocked down their free throws to secure the win.

Kyanna finished the game with a season-high 18 points while Amaya and Gary each scored ten points in the win. With the win, the Ponies improved to 4-0 in the Northeast A and now have an overall record of 6-4.

After the girls wrapped up, the HHS boy's basketball team got started against Lewistown. The Ponies started strong with a bucket from Tre Gary and a 3-pointer from Xavier Butler to take a 5-0 lead.

After the Eagles came back to tie the game, 7-7, Kash Keller gave the Ponies the lead again with a bucket. After Lewistown tied it again, a three from Tre and a basket from Reid Kato gave Havre a 14-11 lead.

The Eagles showed why they were undefeated as they went on a 6-0 run to take the lead. The Ponies stayed resilient as they fought back to tie the game 19-19. But in the closing moments of the quarter, Lewistown scored to take a 21-19 lead.

The Eagles started the second quarter by pushing their lead to 25-19. Again, the Ponies responded with a 6-0 run to take a 26-25 lead. After the Eagles responded with a 4-0 run to retake the lead, the Ponies took control with a 10-0 run. Tre got hot with a pair of threes and another basket for eight total points.

Trailing 36-29, the Eagles ended the half on a 5-0 run to cut Havre's lead to 36-34 at the half. The Eagles carried that momentum into the start of the third with four straight points to take a 38-34 lead.

Over the next few minutes, the Ponies and Eagles went back and forth with the lead. With about five and half minutes left in the third, the Ponies had eked out a 41-40 lead. But the Eagles took over the rest of the third to take control of the game. Over the last five minutes of the quarter, the Eagles went on a 21-3 run to take a 61-44 lead into the fourth.

In the fourth quarter, the Ponies could not fight their way back as the Eagles continued to build their lead as they pulled away for the win. The dynamic duo for the Eagles had a strong night as Royce Robinson scored 32 points and Fischer Brown recorded 26 points. Tre led the Ponies with 14 points in the loss. With the loss, the Ponies dropped to 6-4 this season and 2-2 in the Northeast A.

Both HHS basketball teams will next play in another conference game when they host Glendive this Friday at Havre High Gymnasium. The HHS boys will tip off at 6 p.m. and the HHS girls should tip off around 7:30 p.m.
