Obituary - Bernice "Grandma Neece" (Montes) McGuire

Bernice "Grandma Neece" (Montes) McGuire, (Yellow Sky), 82, passed away due to natural causes at Northern Montana Hospital Thursday, January 26, 2023.

Bernice was born to the late Margaret (Lafromboise) Montes and Bernard Montes September 19, 1940, in Fort Belknap, Montana. In 1962, she married Vaughn Lin McGuire, and they made their home in Harlem, Montana. Bernice worked various jobs and later moved to Rocky Boy, where she was employed as an optometry technician at the Rocky Boy Health Center until her retirement. She was a renowned quilt maker and made beautiful star quilts.

Bernice is survived by her only child, Jewel (Ted) Whitford; three grandchildren, J'Shonn and Jayson McGuire, and J.C. Hawk, all of Rocky Boy; 10 great-grandchildren, Teyler (Maurice) Swan, Amarion Ontiveros, BriElle (Malique) Sunchild, Emmersyn McGuire, Taliyah McGuire, Aundreya Hawk, Eastyn McGuire, Taleeson McGuire, Aubrey Belcourt, and Grayson McGuire; one great-great-granddaughter, Rahmeyra Dionne; her four brothers, Richard, James (Lydia), and Theodore (Mamie) Montes of Rocky Boy, Montana, and Bernard (Tamara) Montes of Salt Lake City, Utah; one sister, Carol Campbell of Rocky Boy, Montana; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, adopted grand- and great-grandchildren, and other extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vaughn McGuire; parents, Margaret (Lafromboise) Montes and Bernard Montes; sister Rosetta Montes; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The wake was held at the Rocky Boy Catholic Church at 4:00 p.m. and a Rosary at 7:00 p.m., all Friday, January 27, 2023. Funeral mass began at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 28, 2023, and burial followed at the Montes Family Cemetery on St. Pierre Road.
