Jean was born July 27, 1933, in Iron River, WI, to Carl and Bernice (Kirkkedahl) Beaver. She was raised primarily in Grand Forks, ND, until she was 12, when the family moved to Nespelem, WA, where Jean graduated from high school and where she met Oliver Pakootas. She then moved to Spokane to attend nurse's training, and married Oliver with whom she had two daughters.
The couple later divorced, and Jean found herself in Havre, where she worked for many years at the Duck Inn. She married Richard Green in 1976, and the couple remained together until his death in 2018.
