VFW presents Voice of Democracy, Patriot's Pen awards

From Dale Herd,

VFW Post 497

Havre's Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 497 has presented awards to local students Porter Blackwell and Grayden Blackwell in its patriotic speech and essay programs.

Voice of Democracy

Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the VFW's premier scholarship program. Each year nearly 80,000 high school students compete for more than $2 million in scholarships.

This year's theme is "Why is the Veteran Important."

We are proud to present this year's Voice of Democracy award to Porter Blackwell. Porter did an outstanding job on his oral report. We were proud to forward his speech on to compete at the state level. Porter's speech did not move on to the national level but he should be very happy with his effort, and I know his parents are very proud.

Patriot's Pen

The Patriot's Pen program is a nationwide youth essay competition that gives students the opportunity to express their views on a patriotic theme. This year's theme is "My Pledge to our Veterans."

The program is open to all sixth, seventh and eighth grade students.

Grayden Blackwell submitted an extraordinary paper on this year's topic. We are extremely proud to present Grayden this year's Patriot's Pen award for his outstanding effort.
