Chinook, Fort Benton advance to Northern C semifinal

The Northern C Divisional Girls Basketball Tournament got rolling Thursday at the Great Falls Four Seasons Arena. Hi-Line girls basketball teams from the District 9C looked to do well as they tried to win Thursday and clinch a spot in the tournament semifinal. Some were able to do so while some now have to play in loser-out games to try to keep their seasons alive.

The undefeated Chinook Sugarbeeters kept rolling Thursday morning with a 62-39 win over Cascade to advance to the semifinal. The Sugarbeeters got off to a hot start taking an 8-0 lead early on. Everyone contributed during this run with four different players scoring for Chinook. After Cascade got on the board with a floater from Sophia Mortag, the Sugarbeeters stretched their lead with a 10-0 run. Hallie Neibauer led the way with six points during this stretch.

Cascade responded with a bucket from Lilou Giraudeau, but Chinook had an 18-4 lead to end the first quarter. The Sugarbeeters continued to play well in the second quarter as they pushed their lead to 29-11 heading into halftime.

Looking to get back in the game, the Badgers started the third quarter on a 6-0 run to cut Chinook's lead to 29-17. But the Sugarbeeters responded with a 13-0 run to retake control. Neibauer continued to roll for the Sugarbeeters with nine points during this run, including a 3-pointer to give Chinook a 42-17 lead late in the third.

The Badgers were unable to get back in the game as the Sugarbeeters coasted toward a spot in the semifinal. The Sugarbeeters shot 40.4 percent from the field with Neibauer leading the way with 28 points on 12-for-20 shooting from the field. Alexus Seymour added 11 points for the Sugarbeeters.

Chinook also played strong defense as the Badgers shot 34.1 percent from the field. Mortag led Cascade with 16 points on 6-for-18 shooting from the field.

Meanwhile, the North Star Knights started their week with a 31-23 loss to Highwood Thursday night. It was slow going throughout the game, especially in the first quarter. Through the first five minutes of the game, neither team could make a field goal as free throws were the only points either team could get. Late in the quarter, Highwood had a 2-1 lead.

The Mountaineers finally got some offense going as they ended the first on a 7-0 run. Trinity Tinsen got the run started with the first field goal of the game. Ellie Aron then made a pair of baskets to give Highwood a 9-1 lead to end the first.

The second quarter started with a bucket from Rainee Watson for North Star's first field goal of the game. After a Highwood bucket, Kaytlyn Domire made a layup and Kira King knocked down a three for the Knights. After another Highwood bucket, King knocked down a shot to cut Highwood's lead to 13-10.

The Mountaineers ended the half with buckets from Tinsen and Aron to take a 17-10 lead into halftime. The Mountaineers then started the second half on a 7-0 run to push their lead to 24-10.

Highwood further stretched its lead to 31-18 late in the third. Domire responded with a three for the Knights to end the quarter. The Knights then got a free throw and a three from Laynie Sattoriva to cut their deficit to 31-22 early in the fourth.

But one more free throw was all that the Knights could get the rest of the way as both teams finished the game cold. The Knights finished the game shooting 17 percent from the field. King and Domire each scored eight points for North Star. The Mountaineers shot 31 percent from the field with Aron scoring 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting.

After winning Wednesday, the Fort Benton Longhorns continued to play well with a 37-17 win over Simms Thursday night. After Simms scored the opening bucket of the game, Emerson Giese knocked down back-to-back threes to give Fort Benton the lead. Another score gave the Longhorns an 8-2 lead to end the first quarter.

Casha Corder got going with a pair of baskets to give her team a 12-2 lead to start the second. The Tigers eventually got going, but the Longhorns continued to make timely scores as they took an 18-9 lead into halftime.

The Longhorns opened the third quarter with threes from Hailee Wang and Giese to push the lead to 24-9. The Longhorns also played strong defense as Simms only recorded one field goal in the third. Even with a 28-11 lead heading to the fourth, the Longhorns kept rolling to pull away for the win to advance to the semifinal.

Giese finished the game with 16 points on 5-for-17 shooting from the field and 4-for-9 shooting from deep. The Longhorns shot 30.6 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from deep. Fort Benton also played strong defense as the Tigers shot 21.2 percent and nobody on Simms scored more than four points.

The Northern C Divisional Girls Basketball Tournament will continue with more games today at the Great Falls Four Seasons Arena. North Star played Simms in a loser-out game this morning. Chinook will play Roy-Winifred in the semifinal game today at 4 p.m. while Fort Benton will play Highwood in another semifinal game tonight at 5:30 p.m.
