Jon was born July 19, 1976, in San Diego, CA, to Robert and Carolynn (Webber) Hotchkiss. He was raised in National City, CA, graduating from Las Palmas High School in 1994. After high school, Jon worked for his father as the assistant manager in an apartment complex.

In 2000, Jon moved to Havre and attended Montana State University-Northern, from which he received his bachelor's degree in secondary education with a focus in history. Jon soon discovered that there was no shortage of high school history teachers, and he worked various jobs for the next several years. During this time, he met Michelle Olson, and the couple married in 2007. Early in 2010, Jon began his education through BNSF, and was soon working as a conductor. He and Michelle added two boys to their ready-made family of four, and they raised them in Havre.

Jon enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking. He was a goofy guy with a sarcastic sense of humor and a small circle of friends, but once you made the circle, you were there. He was straight-forward with everyone and incredibly loyal. Jon loved spending time with his family and friends, and he was obsessed with building things out of Legos.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Hotchkiss.

Jon is survived by his wife, Michelle Hotchkiss of Havre; children, Rose (Dalton) Haskins, Teagan (Cedric) Hale, and Wyatt and William Hotchkiss, all of Havre; two grandchildren with one on the way; mother, Carolynn Hotchkiss of Havre; siblings, Pete (Laura) Moellenberndt of Italy, Patrick (Nadia) Moellenberndt of Vancouver, WA, Tammy Moellenberndt of Havre, Robert Thompson of AZ, and Patricia (Bruce) Hofeldt of Chinook; sister-in-law Shannon (Jim) Vaughn of Havre; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
