Havre track places high at Gold Strike Invitational

This past Saturday in Laurel, the Havre High track and field teams continued their season with the Gold Strike Invitational. At the meet, the HHS boys team took fourth while the HHS girls team finished fifth, so HHS head coach Kari Filius liked how the Blue Ponies performed.

"We did really well. We got some top three places and several first places and some fifth and sixth places. And kids got PRs," Filius said. "I thought we competed real well and did a good job."

The HHS boys team scored 49 total points to finish fourth in its meet. Laurel scored 99 points to take first in the meet while Billings Central finished second and Livingston took third.

On the boys side, many Ponies had strong performances at the meet. In the 800-meter dash, Brody Henry finished second with a time of 2:03.08. He also took fifth in the 1,600-meter dash with a time of 4:55.81.

Brayden Kimberling ran well as he took third in both the 100- and the 200-meter sprints. He recorded a time of 11.51 in the 100 and he posted a time of 23.38 in the 200. In the 1,600, Caleb Tomac finished second with a time of 4:33.12.

Many other Ponies had strong finishes. Kale Van Campen finished third in the triple jump with a measurement of 40-02.5. In the 400-meter sprint, Trayden Riley took fourth with a time of 53.80. Jacob Herring finished fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.65. His teammate Ciaran Courtnage took sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 18.56.

The HHS boys team also performed well in the relay events. In the 1,600 relay, the HHS team made up of Herring, Kimberling, Riley and Michael Emge took fourth with a time of 3:45.11. In the 400 relay, the HHS team consisting of Riley, Kimberling, Brisbin Reiter and Carson Harris took fifth with a time of 45.81.

The HHS girls team scored 55 total points to take fifth in its meet. Laurel finished first with 108 total points while Huntley Project came in second and Lewistown came in third.

Kaydance Reiter had a strong performance as she took first in both the 100 and the 200. She recorded a time of 13.03 in the 100 and she posted a time of 27.10. In the 200. Macy Brandon also ran well as she took fourth in the 100 with a time of 13.41 and she took fifth in the 200 with a time of 27.89.

In the 400, Ela Harbor finished second with a time of 1:03.37. Kyanna Jarvis took second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.57. In the 1,600, Jayla Meldrum took fifth with a time of 5:59.53. In the 400 relay, the HHS team consisting of Jarvis, Reiter, Carolyn Thomas and Macee May took third with a time of 52.49.

The Ponies also did well in the field events. In the long jump, May took fourth with a measurement of 16-00.5. In the pole vault, Taylor Leeds took sixth with a measurement of 8-00.

At the meet, the Ponies competed against other Class A schools such as Laurel, Billings Central and Hardin. With these teams being their opponents in the upcoming postseason, Filius believes the Ponies competed well and are on the right track.

"I feel pretty good. It was nice to see some of those teams so we know where we are with them," Filius said. "It was nice to see them before we got to divisionals. I thought they all approached things well and it was a nice day and they did a good job."

The HHS track and field teams will next compete at the Whitefish Invite this Saturday.
