Pyette commencement speaker at Northern graduation

Ceremonies begin Saturday at 10 a.m.

Montana State University-Northern’s graduation is this Saturday in Northern’s Armory Gymnasium, with local teacher and thespian Jay Pyette set as the commencement speaker.

A release from Northern said the doors will open at 9 a.m. and the processional will begin at 10 a.m., with a reception to follow in the library entryway.

No seats will be reserved for individuals. A section of lower bleacher seats will be reserved for the handicapped. Handicapped parking spaces are limited. It is suggested people arrive early and use the north central entrance to the gymnasium for access to the ceremonies.

The commencement speaker is a well-known member of the community.

Pyette was born and raised in Chinook , graduating from Chinook High School in 1985. He attended Northern Montana College, now Montana State University-Northern, earning his bachelor’s degree in broadfield English with a theater minor in 1989.

He then attended the University of Oregon, earning his master’s degree in theater arts with an emphasis in Shakespeare in 1992. With two fellow graduates, Jay founded the Northwest Ensemble Theatre — NET — and began producing new works.

Pyette returned to Montana in 1993 and NET was officially renamed the Montana Actors’ Theatre, or MAT.

After teaching English and theater at Havre High School, as well as various theater classes at MSU-Northern from 1995 to 2014, Pyette began working exclusively for MAT as its executive director.

He served on the Havre City Council and is the vice chair of the Montana Arts Council and is also an accomplished playwright. His comedy “Rugburns” toured Montana while his drama “The Dead of Winter” premiered in Montana to be subsequently produced in London. His most recent play, “The Harvest,” premiered in Havre last year.

Pyette and his wife, Dana, have five adult children.

Saturday’s commencement ceremony is for students who complete degree requirements by the end of the upcoming summer sessions. The Registrar’s Office is reporting that 285 students will be eligible to receive a total of 420 degrees.

Those numbers break down to 128 women, 157 men, 53 certificates, 160 associate degrees, 185 bachelor’s and 22 master’s degrees. These numbers will not be final until spring semester final exams are over just prior to commencement.

The following graduation candidates are listed in alphabetical order under their appropriate degree.
