After high school, he worked as a cook in various restaurants over the years, and also worked as a laborer and foreman in construction. He married his first wife, and the couple had two children together in addition to Jon helping raise her other two boys before the couple divorced.

Jon enjoyed his many remodeling projects, and he recently began beading and making dreamcatchers.
