  • Violence is not a part of healthy democracy

    Travis McAdam

The tragic assassination attempt on U. S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords shocked Montanans and people across the country. The shooting killed six people and wounded 14 others. All the victims had at least one thing in common. They were all participating in our democratic process by meeting and engaging with an elected official. This shooting is a vivid example of why violence and the threat of violence don't mix with the democratic process. As a society, we need to both recognize and condemn the fact that violence and threats are...

Regis Philbin's surprise decision to leave 'Live!' NEW YORK (AP) — Within moments after Regis Philbin caught viewers off-guard with the news that he'll be leaving his talk show, the guessing game had begun: Who will replace him? Maybe "Survivor" host Jeff Probst? Mark Consuelos, hubby of Regis' co-host, Kelly Ripa? Golden Globes bad boy Ricky Gervais? Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino from "Jersey Shore"? You kidding? Who can ever replace Reege? "I don't want to alarm anybody," he began on Tuesday before dropping the bomb: "...

  • Lawmakers pan plan to downsize Supreme Court

HELENA — A freshman Republican lawmaker wants to cut the size of the state Supreme Court from seven judges to five. Rep. Derek Skees of Kalispell says he believes the judicial branch has grown in power, and he is aiming to reduce that influence. He said decreasing the number of justices will make the branch less effective and alternately increase the influence of the Legislature. Lawyers of all stripes lined up to oppose the bill at a hearing Tuesday. They argued that the backload of cases at the Montana Supreme Court w...

  • Illegal immigrant bill clears House hurdle

    MATT GOURAS Associated Press

The measure was endorsed on a 60-40 vote Tuesday and faces a largely procedural final vote Wednesday before going to the Senate. Backers of the proposal argue it sends a message to those wrongly employing illegal immigrants. They said it would help, a...

  • Local ropers succeed in Great Falls

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

For several Hi-Line cowboys, this weekend's Montana Pro Rodeo Circuit Finals in Great Falls was a rough one. For others, it was a lucrative three days. The MPRCF was held Friday through Sunday at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls, and a pair of area team ropes came away with the most success. Zortman's Shane Schwenke and teammate Kory Mytty finished third in the average for the weekend, as well as the year-end championship and a trip to the Dodge Circuit Finals this spring in Oklahoma City. Schwenke and Mytty garnered...

  • Havre High girls stay close with Bison

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

In a rare Monday night game, the Havre High girls basketball team did all it could to hang with the Class AA Great Falls High Bison. In the end however, the Bison had just enough firepower to hold off the Blue Ponies. On Monday night at the Swarthout Fieldhouse in Great Falls, the Ponies fell to GFH 48-40. But the eight-point margin didn't speak to how well the Ponies played. The two teams played a seesaw first half in which the lead changed hands several times with neither team leading by more than three points. GFH seized...

"I felt bad for the kids," Havre High head coach Andy Smith said. "They played their hearts out and everybody that we put on the floor was competing. I know we lost, but there are a lot of good things we can take out of this game. The kids...

Spang entered the plea agreement after the Montana Supreme Court overturned jury convictions of two counts of intimidation by accountability and one of tampering with evidence, ruling that statements by Spang made after he said he needed a lawyer should not have been admitted in his trial....

  • Montana is seeing progress, not decline

Letter to the Editor mdash Sen Carol Williams and Rep Jon Ses

Editor: For months, Republicans in Montana have tried to cast our state as the most bloated, broken, bankrupt state in the nation. Our Republican colleagues would have you believe we Montanans are responsible for the global recession, that we've lost our innovative spirit, and that we just can't compete anymore. But let us tell you about the Montana we see. We see a state that the U. S. Chamber of Commerce ranked No. 1 for entrepreneurs and business start-ups. We see a state that Forbes magazine called one of the fastest...

  • De-funding TSEP would harm Montanans, Hill County

    Dave Jones

When you hear the phrase "TSEP" or "Treasure State Endowment Program" what does this mean to you? If you are not part of a local government then the phrase may have little significance. You may not know, but funding for TSEP was derived from the coal severance tax trust fund established under Article IX, Section 5, of the Montana Constitution.
