Scout plans to refurbish S-Curve Park

The Havre city park known only as S-Curve park at the entrance to Montana State University-Northern is a popular place for people to rest and watch their kids play.

College students walk through it all the time, said Nicholas Montagino, a home-schooled 10th-grader who live across the street from the park.

While the city takes good care of the park, he said, it lacks several amenities that would enhance the fun people have there, said Montagino.

So, he's made it his Eagle Scout project to improve to the park. He's going to start raising money for the work very shortly.

He'd like to go to various businesses and civic organizations to ask them to donate time or money.

He said they might want to buy a picnic table or a fireplace to honor someone.

When the project is complete, he said, he would like to see 10-foot concrete pads and benches and picnic tables where people can sit down and enjoy the day,

The key element of the revamped park will be a 12-foot-by-12-foot concrete pad with a fireplace. That area will be dedicated in honor of Bonnie Bennett, the lifelong community volunteer who died last year.

"I want to get going soon," Nicholas said. "I want to get started in the fall and finish up in the spring or summer.

He said the improved park will be a real community asset.

Lots of parents watch their kids there, and many college students will enjoy being able to stop there, he said.
