Pony golf teams score well in Lewistown

Havre High's Chance Pitkanen reaches in the hole to retrieve his ball after hitting a hole-in-one at Saturday's Lewistown Invitational in Lewistown. It was Pitkanen's first career ace. The Blue Pony golf teams play at home this weekend when they host the Havre Invitational.

The Havre High golf teams have just one more week of golf before the 2011 postseason begins. And it will be a busy one.

Havre started a stretch of four tournaments in seven days last Saturday at the Lewistown Invitational. The Pony boys finished the Lewistown tourney with a 377 total, good for third place overall. The Pony girls also finished third with a 450.

Individually, the Pony boys got an 88 from senior Simon McCann. In a six-team field, McCann finished a solid eighth overall in the boys Top 10. It was also a stellar day for Blue Pony Chance Pitkanen. Playing on the varsity, Pitkanen put up a solid round of 95, but he also had a Seminole moment in a golfer's career. Pitkanen aced the par-3 sixth hole in Lewistown from 155 yards away. It was Pitkanen's first career hole-in-one. The shot was an impressive one considering it was a varsity high school round, but Pitkanen also had a large pine tree blocking his few of the pin, which made things even more challenging.

Rounding out the scoring for the Havre High boys was Spencer Morkird and David Denny both shooting 97s and Ramsey Drew who fired a 98.

The HHS girls were led by sophomore Katie Beck. Beck shot a 101 in Lewistown which was good enough for a ninth-place finish overall. Nikki Gabrielson shot a 109 and Boston Swensen came in at 111. Dani Murphy shot 119 and Lauren Scofield shot 120 to complete the HHS scoring.

The Ponies will be back on the course Thursday and Friday with tournaments in Billings and Laurel. The Ponies play at the Billings Central Invitational Thursday morning. The tournament will be held at the Castle Rock Golf Course. Havre will remain in the area to play the Laurel Invitational on Friday morning. The Laurel Invite is held at the challenging Laurel Golf Club. Havre wraps up the regular season with the Havre Invitational Saturday at BCGC.
