Laurel — A tree was planted at Montana State University-Northern last week as a tribute to the late Harrison and Arlie Lane. The couple provided an endless amount of volunteers work — to say nothing of moral support — to the Havre community over the several decades they lived here. A tree seems like a very appropriate tribute to the work they did.

Laurel — Relay for Life takes place starting tonight at Havre High School. If you’ve never gone, stop by tonight. If you are becoming a little cynical, be sure to drop by. It is a moving event. Survivors of cancer, recent survivors, those recently in remission and those who have lived 20 years take part in a walk around the track. Survivors tell their stories of hope. Families of those who have died tell of their pain. You come away encouraged by the human spirit and determined to find a cure for cancer.

Laurel — Public officials at all levels — from Hill County emergency personnel to President Barack Obama — have seen the obvious, that an emergency was created by the flooding in late May and early June. The area can now begin the process of getting funds to local, state and tribal governments so they can get moving on making repairs.

Dart — If ever there was a case that pointed out that the fight against drunken driving needs more work, it is the case of Christopher Iron, 28, of Billings. Iron was arrested after a drunken-driving accident, was bailed out and then got in another accident later in the night. Maybe when police determine that somebody is too drunk to drive, they should be required to sleep it off in the county jail before they are allowed back in public.
