Local Golf Report: Ladies league playoffs are underway

From Tee to Green...

League golf is starting to build toward the end of another season. But for Havre’s youth, things are just starting to get interesting.

The Havre High golf team, headed by Brett Gilman, is just over a week away from taking to the course for the start of the 2015 season. The Blue Ponies will begin practice Aug. 13 in preparation for the season-opening Great Falls Invitational Aug. 17-18. A quick reminder, all players planning on participating in high school golf must have a sports physical completed before they can join the team.

For more information on the upcoming HHS golf season, see next week’s From Tee to Green.

Meanwhile, the playoffs for ladies league at Prairie Farms Golf Course have already begun.

Last Thursday night, the first round of the playoffs took place with Western Drug defeating Makin’ Waves 19-17, Northern Montana Health Care defeating Schubert Agency 23-13, Patrick Construction beat Havre Heating & AC 20-16, Independence Bank took down Columbia Grain 25-11, Scharfe, Kato & Co. beat Prairie Farms 20.5-15.5 and D.A. Davidson bested Rock Solid 23-13.

Ali Ward was low gross for the night with a 39, while Karla Bolken was low net with a 30. The second round of the playoffs will be this Thursday night.

Men’s league at Prairie Farms is in its final weeks of the regular season. And the race for the last eight playoff berths is heating up.

Last Tuesday night saw Northern Edge, Nalivka’s and Bing-N-Bob’s all tie for high team with 22 points. Randi Mudge was low gross with an even-par 36, while Ken Wagner was low net with a 28.5.

Wednesday night, Michelob Light earned high-team honors with 23 points. The team was composed of Jim Kato, Tom Adams, Tom Baker and Jim Heberly. Jordy Donoven fired a 2-under par 34 for low gross, while Byron Ophus was low net with a 31.

There are now just two weeks of the regular season left in men’s league.

As always, the Northern Montana Health Care Foundation Scramble was a huge success. With a full field of teams and plenty of fun, the tournament, held last Saturday at Prairie Farms, was once again one of the top events on the local golf circuit. Next up at Prairie Farms will be the annual men’s club championship. The tourney is an 18-hole, stroke play event, and it will be played Aug. 23. For more information, call the Pro Shop at Prairie Farms.

Beaver Creek Golf Course will also play host to a special tournament at the end of this month. On Aug. 29, the Second Annual MSU-Northern Nursing Golf Tournament will be held. The tourney is a four-person scramble and the proceeds go to the MSU-N Class of 2016. For more information, or to register, call Kendra at 406-291-4267.

Meanwhile, a summer of golf continues for local standout Jordy Donoven. Fresh off a top 20 finish at the state amateur, Donoven will play in the Montana Cup today and Wednesday in Billings. The Ryder Cup style event pits to the top 12 amateurs in the state against the top 12 PGA professionals in the state. Donoven will be a junior at Rocky Mountain College this fall.
