Hi-Line Volleyball Roundup

Beeters look strong

Summer isn’t over. But the fall took center stage this past weekend, and that included the start of the 2016 high school volleyball season.

From Sunburst to Belt, and lots of places in between, area volleyball teams got their first taste of regular season action.

The season started Friday night with a slew of regular season games, including the Chinook Sugarbeeters winning a hard-fought match over Fort Benton in Chinook. The Beeters fell behind, dropping the first set 25-12, but they rebounded with three straight wins, by scores of 25-20, 25-10 and 25-21.

Taylor Neibauer racked up 14 kills for Chinook, while Kelsey Mathon had 28 assists and six aces. Coya Knack had five kills and three blocks for the Longhorns.

Friday night also the saw the Box Elder Bears start their season off with a sweep of Geraldine-Highwood. The Bears, who could pose a very strong team this season, won by scores of 25-23, 26-24 and 25-22.

Meanwhile, the Big Sandy Pioneers fell to a tough Centerville squad Friday night, losing by scores of 25-11, 25-11 and 25-9. Jenna Leader had seven kills and one assist for the Pioneers, while Jaylyn Cline had one ace, five digs and three blocks.

Saturday was also a busy day for area teams, as many competed in preseason tournaments.

In Malta, the Sugarbeeters rolled to another Malta Invitational title by defeating Grass Range-Winnett in the championship match. Chinook, which was perfect in pool play, also beat Scobey and Tri-Cities in the bracket portion of the tourney. Harlem also went 1-1 in the bracket, while Rocky Boy was 0-2.

The North Star Knights were also in action Saturday at the Belt Showcase. In pool play, North Star beat Roy-Winifred and tied Power, but lost to Belt and Harlowtown. Big Sandy was also in the field, and in pool play, the Pioneers tied Cascade, but suffered losses to Centerville, Reed Point-Rapelje and DGS.

In the bracket portion of the tourney, Belt finished first, while the Knights placed sixth and the Pioneers 10th.

More tournament action is on top this weekend, as Chinook hosts the Chinook Invitational and North Star hosts its annual North Star Showcase in Rudyard and Gildford.
