Letter to the Editor - Assault rifles should be illegal

I am a 10-year-old fourth-grader. For the last year I have been learning how to target shoot with my gun. I have a .22 short rifle that is pink. My dad bought the rifle for me. I have been learning how to be safe with my gun. My dad has been teaching me. I am going to take hunter safety soon.

I like target shooting. I might also hunt depending on the animal. I think people should have guns to hunt or target shoot with but not to be able to use them to shoot other people. I don’t think people should have assault rifles. They should only be used by the military.

But some people unfortunately use them to shoot in schools. Kids and teachers in schools get killed all the time by people using those assault rifles.

In my school, some of us kids talk about these things. We are scared. We don’t want it to happen in any of our schools. I don’t think adults understand how frightened we kids are.

I think that people should not be able to have these weapons. They should pass a law against having these weapons available to everyday people.

Adults should consider what children like me think about this.
