North Stars ready to play at Legion Field

In baseball, the old saying is that momentum depends on the next day’s starting pitcher. Well after coming into Lewistown with some momentum Tuesday night, the Havre Northstars American Legion baseball team ran into a tough pair of starting pitchers.

Ben Kohlar and Hunter Schell both went the distance for the Redbirds in Lewistown Tuesday night as they swept the Northstars by the scores of 5-1 and 10-0. Schell allowed just one run and struck out four in his win, despite giving up 11 hits. Kohlar struck out three but allowed just two hits in a five-inning shutout that ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule. Havre is now 15-14-1 on the season and 8-6 in the Northern A District. The Northstars will play again tonight against the Tri-County Cardinals. The first pitch at Legion Field will go out at 5 p.m.

In the first game of the Northern A doubleheader, Brenden Danielson was on the mound for Havre and he put together a solid outing, giving up six hits and five runs. Yet none of those runs were earned, and Lewistown was aided greatly by five Northstars errors, including two in the bottom of the sixth inning that led three runs by the Redbirds, pushing a 2-0 lead to 5-0. Ethan Roberts doubled and eventually scored on a sacrifice by Quinn Reno. However, it was too little too late.

Roberts was one of three Havre players to get two hits in the loss, the others were Jake Sedahl and Gavin Mosbrucker. The Northstars had 11 hits compared to six for the Redbirds, but in addition to the five errors, Havre also left nine on base.

In the second game, Tony Antley was on the mound for Havre. Unfortunately, the Redbirds made sure his night came to an end early. After giving up just two runs in the top of the first, the Redbirds chased Antley off the mound following a six-run third inning. Antley, who allowed eight runs on eight hits, got the loss. Lewistown scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, and after Havre failed to generate a run in the top of the fifth, the game was over.

Danielson and Sedahl were the only Havre batters to get a hit and also the only Northstars to reach base.

Havre will look to rebound with six games at home starting with Tri-County tonight. The Northstars will also host Great Falls Saturday and Lethbridge Sunday. All games will be played at Legion Field. The first pitch tonight will go out at 5.
