Ice Hawks battled in MAHA state tournament

The Havre Ice Hawks put together a solid campaign which put them into the MAHA State tournament which was held inside the Havre Ice Dome over the weekend.

And starting last Thursday, the Ice Hawks battled some of the best high school hockey teams in the state and, unfortunately, Havre was unable to get out of group play as the Ice Hawks dropped all three games in order.

The first game came Thursday night in pool play against Kalispell, a team that Havre split with during the regular season. The two teams were tied 0-0 after the first period before the Fusion notched two goals in the second period. Ethan Roberts found the back of the net to keep Havre within striking distance at 2-1 heading to the third period, but Kalispell scored two more times to win 4-1.

Friday, the Ice Hawks tried their luck against the Butte Copper Kings, the third-place team in the standings during the regular season and despite a late rally that featured goals from Roberts, Bridger Staples and Tavish McLean, the Ice Hawks went down 6-3. Butte scored once in the first period and three times in the second to jump out to a 4-0 lead, which became 5-0 early in the third period. Havre scored three consecutive goals but a goal from Noah Williamson made it 6-3 in favor of Butte, which ended up being the final score.

Saturday, Havre was trying to give itself hope of advancing with a win over Missoula, the top-seeded team in its group and early on, the Ice Hawks were right there as McLean gave them a 1-0 with a first-period goal. The Bruins scored twice to go ahead 2-1 in the second, but Staples responded, hitting the back of the net and sending the game to the third period tied at 2-2.

Preston Jones of Missoula gave the Bruins the lead only to see Roberts tie the score a couple of minutes later. However, the Bruins scored three more times and, even though Havre got another goal from Staples, it wasn't enough to avoid a 6-4 defeat.

With the three losses at the state tournament, the Ice Hawks finished with the season with an overall record of 9-11-3.

The Missoula Bruins beat the Billings Bulls in the state championship game Sunday afternoon.
