  • Council nixes lower salaries to pay for clerk

    John Paul Schmidt|Updated Sep 8, 2014

Havre City Council, at Wednesday’s budget meeting, voted against allowing City Court Judge Virginia Seigel to hire a new part-time clerk. Ward 4 councilmember Andrew Brekke proposed a budget that would reduce each councilmember’s monthly salary from $200 to $75 in order to pay for the clerk’s salary. Brekke said that after conversations over the last few meetings, he decided to propose that funds be shifted around in the budget to fund the part-time clerk, including some of the money coming from their own salaries. “I th...

  • Skylights put a wrap on a tough preseason

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 8, 2014

For the last three weeks, the young Montana State University-Northern volleyball team has been going through a challenging nonconference growing process, and that process ended with two matches Saturday afternoon in Helena. At the Carroll College/Montana Tech Tournament Friday and Saturday, the Skylights played their final four matches of the preseason, going 1-3. But more importantly, Northern once again squared off against elite competition, this time taking on three...

  • George Ferguson Column: Lights deserved the moment on Saturday

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 8, 2014

There are a lot of superlatives to describe what the Montana State University-Northern football team has gone through the last month, but most of those words wouldn't really do it justice. To have your head coach, the man who recruited you to come to Havre and play football out of high school or junior college, or hired you as an assistant, to have him taken away from the entire program just days into fall camp, those of us who haven't been in a college football program, we...

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 8, 2014

It took a little longer than usual, but the first game-action of the season finally arrived for the Havre High volleyball team this weekend. And despite some mixed results, it was a promising start. The Blue Ponies started their busy opening weekend in Belgrade with a pair of Central A Conference matchups against Belgrade and Livingston. In the opening match against Belgrade, the Panthers flexed their muscle, dispatching HHS in three straight games, 25-12, 25-6 and 25-14. Then, the Ponies capped off the night against...

  • Ponies fall short in Miles City

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 8, 2014

The Havre High football team is not out for moral victories, instead, the Blue Ponies want to win football games. But despite losing a second consecutive game to open the season, the Ponies proved they are nobody's underdog. Going into Friday night's game at Miles City, the Cowboys were viewed as the prohibitive favorite, yet the Ponies would have none of it, going toe-to-toe with the home team for 48 minutes before falling short in heartbreaking fashion, 27-19. A week after dropping its home-opener to Whitefish, HHS (0-2) pl...

  • HHS runners start strong

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 8, 2014

You can't beat fall weather in Montana and there wasn't a better example of it than Friday in Cut Bank where the Havre High cross country teams ran their first race of the season. The Blue Ponies, who competed in the Cut Bank time trials, used the meet to determine their varsity runners for the 2014 season but also got a chance to pit themselves against some top competition from all classifications. Because the meet was a time trial, there were no team scores kept, but that didn't mean that the HHS didn't have a chance to...

The atlatl is an ancient contraption that allows long, spear-like arrows to be thrown swiftly, historically at a possible dinner.
