  • DNRC responds to complaints about East Fork Fire

    Alex Ross|Updated Sep 25, 2017

A lack of resources, poor communications, complex terrain and the sheer scope of the fire led to complications in the East Fork Fire response that some may have seen as failure, East Fork Fire Incident Commander Don Pyrah said Friday. “This is not a normal fire,” Pyrah said. “A normal fire here is several acres, it’s easy to put out and (people) go back to their lives. That is not what occurred here.” Pyrah’s comments came after a public meeting Thursday night in Montana State University-Northern’s Hensler Auditorium wh...

  • Cutting bone

    Updated Sep 18, 2017

Like Montanans across the state, each month my husband and I sit down at our kitchen table and balance our checkbook. We pay our bills, we look at our bank account, we readjust our budget, and we do our best to put aside money for the months and years ahead. Recently, the state of Montana received some disturbing news: The amount of money coming into our state is not enough to pay our bills. So in order to keep the lights on, the governor has been forced to instruct his cabinet to find 10 percent in possible spending cuts to...

A simple Google search will yield hundreds of stories about the impacts of these events, but very few...

  • Letter to the Editor - 'When' arrived this year

    Updated Sep 18, 2017

Editor, With the drought and fire our part of the world has taken some natural resource “hits” this year. These have led to some personal losses. Though personal losses from the fire are substantial for a few folks, overall our region will suffer more from the drought than from the fire. Our part of the world is subject to fires and droughts just like the Gulf and East coasts are subject to hurricanes. Regardless of the origin of the fire and drought and weather, the progression of each has its own momentum. Droughts, fir...

Jensen, a redshirt freshman, completed 11 of 15 passes in relief, finding Keenan Curran for a pair...
