Lights, Skylights sweep Saints

The Montana State University-Northern basketball teams made it 2-for-2 in a Frontier Conference opening twin bill Saturday night in the Armory Gymnasium. The MSU-N men won a thrilling, come-from-behind battle with Carroll College, 60-57, while the Skylights beat the Saints 52-42.

The No. 24 Lights struggled all night offensively against an improved Carroll club, but two Roshawn West 3-pointers in the final three minutes, and four clutch free throws by Jesse Vaughan lifted MSU-N to the victory. Northern trailed for all the of the first half, minus a 26-26 tie, and fell behind by as many as 11 points in the second frame. But, in the final 3:17, the Lights outscored the Saints 10-1, starting the year 1-0 in league play.

Northern, which improved to 8-2 overall, got 15 points from West and 12 by Alfie Miller, while knocking down eight triples on the night.

The Lights are back at home to host the University of Lethbridge on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, the story was similar for the Skylights early on. Carroll and MSU-N both struggled offensively in the first half, but a 9-2 run helped the Skylights take a 21-17 lead into intermission. Northern then ripped off a 14-2 run in the middle portion of the second half, which ultimately lifted the Skylights to their first win over Carroll since the 2011-12 season.

MSU-N, which improved to a perfect 7-0 on the season, got a game-high 15 points from junior Megan Feldman, while Taylor Cummings chipped in with 10. MSU-N also held the Saints to their lowest offensive output in more than three seasons.

The Skylights return to the road to face the University of Alberta Augustana for two games next Friday-Saturday.
