Hi-Line Boys Basketball Roundup

Beeters win three 9C games; Bears roll on

Many area basketball teams have just two weeks of competition left in the regular season, and some of those Hi-Line programs were able to continue on the winning path, while others still found themselves sticking close to the loss column.

On Thursday, the District 2B Harlem Wildcats dropped another close league game at home. The Glasgow Scotties defeated the Wildcats 47-43 as Harlem was unable to overcome a two-point third quarter. The Wildcats did post 16 points in the fourth, but ran out of time while attempting to dig their way back into contention.

Cory Stiffarm led the Wildcats with 11 points, while Stanley Irvine finished with eight. Tristin Gone also had six to help lead the Harlem that had nine total individuals score.

Also Thursday in Chinook, the Chinook Sugarbeeters and Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds met in a 9C matchup. The Thunderbirds got out to a 21-13 first quarter lead, but the Beeter offense found a way to battle back with 17 in the second, 16 in the third, and 15 in the fourth quarter, overtaking the Thunderbirds who scored just five points in the second quarter as Chinook win 61-53.

Nate Doney led the Thunderbirds with 14 points, while Sterling Whitecow finished with nine, and Keenan Stiffarm finished with eight. Zach Molyneaux led the Beeters with a game-high 27 points, while Jake Diemert and Lane Seymour scored 11 each.

Chinook also grabbed a 9C win Friday when the Beeters dominated the last-place Big Sandy Pioneers 65-15 in Big Sandy. Seymour led the Beeters with 16 points and Molyneaux finished with 14. TJ Shipp led the Pioneers with five points.

The No. 1-ranked Class C team in the state also won Friday as the Box Elder Bears took down the 9C Thunderbirds in conference play. Playing in Box Elder, the Bears defeated the Thunderbirds 91-65. Hays Lodge-Pole did find consistent offense, but couldn’t keep up with the Bears. Randall Gardipee went off for 26 points to lead a Bears’ offense that scored 29 in the first quarter, followed by at least 20 points in the following three frames. Clayton Morsette Jr. also scored 15, while Jerrod Four Colors scored 11, and Brandon The Boy scored 10. Whitecow led the Thunderbirds with 23 points followed by Tyson Shambo’s 19.

In 10C action the Chester/J-I Hawks lost a narrow contest to Power, losing 75-69 at home Friday. The Hawks held the lead throughout the game, thanks in part to a 20-point first quarter, but struggled late. Holding a 56-51 lead after three quarters, Power outscored the Hawks 24-13 in the fourth and final frame. Justin May led the Hawks with a solid 22 points, and got help from Steven May with 11 and Tim Stokes with 12.

Back in 9C action the North Star Knights and Turner Tornadoes both suffered losses on Friday.

Sunburst defeated the Knights 54-44 in Rudyard, while Roy-Winifred defeated the Tornadoes 70-44 on the road. Both the Knights’ and Tornadoes’ offenses struggled to keep pace with opposition, giving up too many points and getting just one double-digit scorer each. Gavin Spinler led the Knights with 16 points, and Dylan Welsh led the Tornadoes with 11.

District 1B Rocky Boy continues to look better as the season progresses and capped off Friday’s contests with a 75-70 win over the 2B Malta Mustangs in Malta. The Stars gave up at least 19 points in each of the first three quarters, but escaped the Mustangs with a 23-12 fourth quarter. Junior Day Child led the Stars with his 17 points, but Cecil Lafromboise and Bubby Gopher both pitched in 14.

After a loss Thursday, the 9C Thunderbirds were able to get out of the weekend with a win Saturday. In nonleague play the Thunderbirds took down Roy-Winifred 50-40 at home. HLP led by just five after the third frame, but was able to clinch the win with a 15-10 run through the fourth. Shambo had another nice outing with 17 points, but was the lone double-digit scorer for the Thunderbirds.

Chester/J-I also bounced back from a loss earlier in the weekend. This time the Hawks defeated the North Star Knights 75-36 in nonleague play in Rudyard. Lohr led the Hawks with 13 points. Ramberg and Tim Stokes both scored 12, while Steven may scored 11. North Star received 14 points from Spinler and eight from Sam Ulmen and eight from Matthew Helmbrecht.

Harlem wasn’t as lucky after its Thursday loss. Saturday, Shelby defeated the Wildcats 39-32 in Shelby, giving the Wildcats an 0-2 finish to the weekend. The Wildcats had a strong start and finish to the contest, but let Shelby sneak in front through the second and third quarters. In the span Shelby outscored the Wildcats 20-10. Anthony Gray led Harlem with 12 points.

Chinook had a rare three-game weekend, and finished off the weekend with a big win over Turner in 9C action. The Beeters defeated the Tornadoes 74-49 at home, utilizing a 27-12 lead and never looking back.

Molyneaux had a big night with 23 points, followed by Seymour’s 15, and Zack Schellin’s 11. Jacob MacLean finished with 10 for Chinook. Turner got 15 points from Lucas Reed.

Box Elder remained undefeated on the season, and held steady as the top ranked Class C program in the state. Saturday the Bears defeated Heart Butte with relative ease, taking the win 75-59.

Gardipee had another big game with 26 points to lead the Bears, while Plain Bull Jr. added another 16.
