Havre Daily reporter wins award

Havre Daily News reporter Tim Leeds has won a third-place prize in the investigative journalism award from the Inland Press Association, a national organization of newspapers.

The prize was for his coverage of the bribery and theft scandals centered at Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation. On the day former State Rep. Tony Belcourt pleaded guilty to several charges, Leeds did a complete sidebar story, based on federal court records, on the how the complex embezzlement scheme worked.

The award was for newspapers with a daily circulation of 10,000 or less.

Leeds has been with the Havre Daily News for about 15 years, and covers courts, county government and politics.

"We are very excited that Tim won this award," said Havre Daily News Publisher Stacy Mantle. "He won not only for himself but for the Havre Daily News and the staff.

"Winning an award from the Inland Press Association is a prestigious honor," she said.

"We are proud that we have covered the Rocky Boy scandal fairly and accurately from the beginning," Mantle added.
