Library to digitize back HDN issues

Greetings from the Havre-Hill County Library. We hope the library is something you can be thankful for as Thanksgiving approaches.

This week we at the library are thankful for the Havre-Hill County Library Foundation Board, which has helped us fund a project that we’ve been considering for a long time. We are going to digitize all of our back copies of the Havre Daily News, from 2013 all the way back to 1927.

Libraries should always be on the cutting edge of technology, and microfilm is no longer considered the cutting edge. Once this project is completed the papers will be available on our website, viewable from home or almost anywhere else via the Internet.

We shipped the microfilm, about 220 reels Wednesday. For the time being, only the most recent issues of the Havre Daily News will be available for viewing at the library. This step in the process, scanning the microfilm into the computer, is expected to take two weeks. Once the microfilm has been scanned, our vendor will mail the reels back to us and they will once again be available for public use. In the meantime, we can order reels from the Montana Historical Society if the matter is urgent.

The Havre-Hill County Library staff is also thankful for our wonderful library users, and we hope to provide you with many fun things to do this winter.

We have started showing movies every other Thursday at 7 p.m. The next movie we show will be “The Hundred-Foot Journey” on Thursday, Dec. 4. These events are always free, open to the public and we provide popcorn.

We here at the Havre-Hill County Library hope to provide you with services that you can be thankful for. If you have any questions, please call us at 265-2123, email us at [email protected], or just stop in.
