Obituary - Ellen Sophie Long

Ellen Sophie Long, 93, passed from the world surrounded by her loving family at her home in Fort Benton. Jan. 15, 2015, one month before her 94th birthday.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan 24, at 11: a.m., at Fort Benton Methodist Church.

Ellen was born in Wolf Point on Feb. 12, 1921, to John and Ester (Pederson) Kjelgaard, their third of seven children. She grew up on the family farm south of Oswego, Montana, and attended Highland School, graduating from Wolf Point High School in 1940.

She received a teaching certificate from Northern Montana College in 1943 and taught in rural schools in McCone County.

She married Clifford V. Long on March 2, 1945, and to this marriage were born five children. She worked as a homemaker, postal carrier and clerk, and later Cliff and Ellen owned and operated Long's Pay N Save in Frazer, Montana.

Ellen was active in her church families in Frazer, Nashua, and Fort Benton. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary, Rebecca's and ALCW.

She is survived by children, Janice K. (Richard) Fisher , Laura Y. (Terry) Aschim, Calvin J. (Pamela) Long and Clifford W "Wally" (Shawna) Long; daughter-in-law, Terri Long; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings are Marie Vaughn and Ruth Miller and sister-in-law Shirley Kjelgaard and many nieces and nephews.

She enjoyed family camping trips, playing games, quilting with her daughters and giving the quilts to each family member.

She is now safe in Jesus' arms as she joins her son, Larry, and husband, Cliff, as well as her parents and siblings.

Memorials can be made to Golden Age Center (Meals on Wheels) and Fort Benton and Geraldine Methodist churches.
