Wrestling announcer receives HHS Elliott Award

Long-time wrestling announcer Randy Riggin received the Dr. Jim Elliott Memorial Award Saturday at the Havre High School boys basketball game.

Havre High School wrestling coach Scott A. Filius nominated Riggin for the award for his outstanding work with the wrestling tournament in the last 20 years.

Riggin has volunteered to announce for the Havre Invitational Wrestling Tournament for 20 years. The position is a paid one, but Riggin has refused to take money for his work. He has also hosted traveling wrestlers in his home in the summer as they visit wrestling camps.

Filius wrote that when Riggin's kids were in school, he would invite the entire wrestling team to his house for pancake breakfasts.

"Randy is one of the good guys who always has a kind word for everyone," Filius wrote. "As tournament MC, Randy is always on top of recognizing local kids and members of the wrestling community."

Riggin has had respect for many members of the community and has also maintained an appreciation for the choir program at the high school. He always finds a student to sing the national anthem, Filius wrote.

"It is without any reservations whatsoever that I nominate Randy Riggin for the Dr. Jim Elliott Award," he wrote.

Stacy Rismon, the president of the Havre High School Booster Club, said the award was first given in 2001 and that it aims "to honor or recognize someone who has supported Blue Pony activities."

Elliott was a long-time volunteer and his family created the award in his honor and to honor those with similar community-based concerns and initiative.
