Local Golf Report: Rotary Youth Golf Camp is next week

From Tee to Green...

One thing I haven’t mentioned from my recent trip to the 2015 U.S. Open was how the other local guys who made the trip enjoyed it. Mainly, that’s because I hadn’t had a chance to talk to them yet.

Trust me, when you’re on a golf course with 40,000 spectators spread out over 18 holes, the odds of finding specific people are low, especially when cellphone use is pretty much prohibited.

And while I did see good friend and former Havre High golf standout Jeremy Jensen and his wife briefly, I really hadn’t gotten his take on things until last week. Jensen, who is arguably one of the top golfers on our local scene, said that they enjoyed every minute of the second round at Chambers Bay, and I was glad to hear that, because after all, that was part of the couple’s honeymoon, and honeymoons are supposed to be special.

I was also recently able to catch up with Havre’s foursome that made the trek out to Chambers Bay, Lunar Evans, Dave Peterson, Cal Wirtzberger and Buzz Pizzini. From what I gathered from those four guys, it was a great experience. They managed to take in all four rounds of the U.S. Open, while still keeping golf clubs in their hands, playing at various courses around the Seattle area each day. That’s something I was unable to do. I spent five days and at least eight hours each day at Chambers Bay and never so much as touched a golf club.

So well done guys, and after talking to them throughout the last week, it seems as though the Havre crew that made it out to the U.S. Open unanimously had a great time, and liked to love the course.

Back on the local golf front, we’re making the turn to July and, sadly, that means golf season is already half over. But, there will still be plenty of excitement over the next two months, and even beyond, with the return of Havre High golf in the fall.

In ladies league action last Thursday, Independence Bank scored 22.5 points to earn high-team honors. The team was composed of Terry Lilletvedt, Teresa Brown, Pam Veis and Maxine Munson. Ali Ward fired a 39 for low gross, while Kim Klein was low net with a 29.5.

On the men’s league scene at Prairie Farms, last Tuesday night saw Hole 19 grab high-team honors with 24.5 points. Gerry Veis, Mike (Cakes) Purkett, Shane Kemmer and Mike Erickson made up the squad. Kyle Sheppard shot a fantastic 3-under par 33 for low gross, while Ken Wagner was low net with a 29.

Last Wednesday night saw Yummy Foods grab high team with 24 points. The team was composed of Dave Greenwood, Tom Reynolds, Jerry Kuhn and Norton Pease. Jordy Donoven was low gross with a 1-under 35, while Jim Kirkpatrick was low net with a 30.

Also, a reminder to the junior golfers of Havre that the annual Rotary Golf Camp will be held July 7-9 at Prairie Farms. The camp is open to youths through the age of 18. For more information, and to sign up, contact the Pro Shop at Prairie Farms.
