  • Ponies dual B-C powers

Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News sports

Whether it's a Class A, Class C, Class B or a Class AA opponent, it doesn't matter. The purpose of the Havre High wrestling schedule is to get better in time for the postseason. And preparing to host two of the better B-C programs around, the Central A Blue Ponies will do just that. Tonight at 5 p.m. at the HHS gymnasium the Ponies will host the B-C Conrad Cowboys and Forsyth Dogies. "Forsyth is the top B-C team and Conrad is always tough," Havre High head coach Scott Filius said. "And we are going to wrestle both of them at...

Tonight the Central A boys will take to the road to face the Bison, while also tonight, the Pony girls will host the Bison at the HHS gymnasium at 7 p.m. for two non-conference matchups. When the Pony girls faced the Bison earlier this month in Great Falls, the Ponies fell 48-40. And after playing the Bison so well the first time around, the Ponies are looking to do so again at...

  • HDN Athlete Profile: Kacie Johnson

Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News sports

Senior swimmer Kacie Johnson has been a big part of the Havre High girls swim team success. Johnson has been a varsity letter winner all four years, and has participated in the all-class swim meat for three years, as well as now preparing to compete in her fourth. While at state, Johnson has been a part of a state championship team her freshman and sophomore year, and helped her team take second place at state a year ago. And with another state meet just around the corner, Johnson is hoping she and the rest of the Ponies can...

  • Blue Ponies take down Rustlers

Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News sports

The Class AA CMR Rustlers came to town, but the Havre High Blue Ponies handled their own business. The Central A Ponies hosted the Rustlers Tuesday night at the Havre High gymnasium. And the Ponies came away with the 52-27 victory. But the Ponies' lineup was a little different on Tuesday. HHS remained open at 98 pounds, but to fill the hole at 140, the Ponies had five grapplers move up in weight. Gilbert Bara usually wrestles at 112, but moved up to 119, and Duell Stadel who normally wrestles at 119 moved up to 125. Thomas Gr...

  • Hi-Line Boys Basketball Roundup

Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News sports

There were some big wins and surprising upsets in boys basketball across the Hi-Line this weekend. On Thursday, in Class 9C action, the Box Elder Bears defeated the Chinook Sugarbeeters 72-56. The Beeters were preseason favorites to take the 9C, but the Bears proved to be contenders as well. Overall, the Bears put together four solid quarters. They took a 15-8 lead after the first quarter, and managed to add 22 in the second, 15 in the third and 20 more in the fourth and final frame. And the Chinook offense had a decent...

Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News sports

Coming out of another outstanding weekend of action, the Havre High wrestling team won't waste any time to once again return to the mat. Just over the weekend, the Central A Blue Ponies took second place at the Class A Duals after falling to Belgrade in the championship round. Now, hoping their good production will carry over, the Ponies will host the Class AA CMR Rustlers tonight at the Havre High gymnasium. The varsity matches are hoped to get going around 5:30. • So close: Ponies fall just short against GFH

Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News sports

Slow starts are difficult to overcome, and the Havre High boys basketball team experienced that first hand. Monday night at the Havre High gymnasium, the Central A Blue Ponies played host to the Class AA Great Falls Bison. But in a very tight matchup, the Bison defeated the Ponies 53-52. "I felt bad for the kids," Havre High head coach Andy Smith said. "They played their hearts out and everybody that we put on the floor was competing. I know we lost, but there are a lot of good things we can take out of this game. The kids...

  • Hi-Line Boys Basketball roundup

Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News sports

With the postseason tournaments drawing closer and closer, regular season games are also growing in importance. And there were plenty of games to go around the Hi-Line this weekend. Thursday night the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds and Turner Tornadoes met in 9C action. And it was the Thunderbirds who came away with the always-important conference win, defeating the Tornadoes 66-44. Turner got off to a slow start offensively, and HLP took advantage. After the Tornadoes posted five first quarter points, the Thunderbirds found th...

With the Class A duals and post season looming just around the corner, the Havre High wrestling team continues to grow stronger. And after moving into the No. 7 spot on Friday, the Ponies finished the tournament as the No. 8 team on Saturday with 126.5 points. And though every team present would have liked to grab the No. 1 spot, the Ponies were satisfied with where they finished up. "After you acknowledge you...

  • Four is enough: Pony girls survive Conrad

Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News sports

A win is a win, and teams will take them anyway they can. But next time around the Havre High girls basketball team would probably like to do so with five players on the court. Saturday in Conrad the Ponies were able to get back to the win column. The Central A Blue Ponies defeated the Class B Conrad Cowgirls 49-46. But after a strange series of events, the Ponies played the last 1:30 or so with just four girls on the court. And despite the disadvantage, the Ponies were still able to come from behind and capture the nonconfer...

  • Browning subdues HHS boys

Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News sports

Heading into Friday night's game, the Havre Blue Pony boys had spent a lot of time preparing for the conference rival Browning Indians. But even with the prep time, the Indians' pressure proved to be too much. Friday at the Havre High gymnasium the Ponies hosted the Indians in Central A action. But in a dominant win, the Indians defeated the Ponies 70-48. The big difference in the conference matchup was the Indians' pressure defense and high-tempo style of play. "It's one of those deals where if you make mistakes anywhere...

  • Ponies wrangle Conrad for a home split

Saturday at the Havre High gymnasium the Central A Blue Ponies improved to 3-5 overall with a 51-46 win over the Class B Conrad Cowboys. "That was kind of a gut check," Havre High head coach Andy Smith said. "We were disappointed with how we played against Browning, we didn't do a good job whether it was offensively or defensively. But I thought the kids came out and played awfully hard on...

Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News sports

The Havre High boys and girls basketball teams have been on the court almost nonstop as of late. Tonight, both Central A squads will face Class 1B Conrad. Tipping off at 7 p.m. at the HHS gymnasium, the Pony girls (3-12) will host the Cowgirls for senior night. And at 7:30 p.m. the Havre boys (7-9) will face the Cowboys in Conrad. Christina Mack and Paighton...

  • HHS girls falter against Central A foes

Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News sports

It was a rough two games for the Central A Blue Pony girls this weekend. Playing two very tough conference opponents, the Ponies were looking forward to using the weekend as a measuring stick. But being blown out in back-to-back games, the Ponies now know they have some work to do before the postseason. On Friday the Ponies were on the road where the Lewistown Golden Eagles defeated HHS 53-36. And on Saturday the Ponies hosted Butte Central, but the Maroons handed the Ponies a 64-38 loss at the Havre High gymnasium. Saturday...

  • Pony grapplers keep their Cut Bank Invite championship

Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News sports

The growing trend of the Havre Blue Pony wrestling program is that they know how to win. Friday and Saturday, the Central A Ponies were in Cut Bank, where they captured the No. 1 spot with a team score of 241 points. Glasgow finished in a distant second with 169 points, and Conrad finished in third with 156. "The kids came out of the break and wrestled real well," Havre High head...

  • Blue Pony grapplers hit the mat in Cut Bank

Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News sports

With winter break finally coming to an end, the Havre High wrestling team is ready to get back into action. But instead of rushing right into heavy competition, the Ponies got sort of a warm up on Monday. The Ponies hosted the programs from Chinook, Glasgow, Big Sandy and Chester/J-I in what is being called a glorified practice. There were no fans, referees or scores kept, instead the Ponies just matched up with other kids and got some extra time on the mats. "You have that long break and you need to wrestle somebody else,"...

With the regular season winding down, every game seems to hold more and more importance. And with five games left on the schedule, three of which that are conference games, the Havre High boys basketball team has the confidence that they can make a run at the No. 1 spot. The Blue Ponies sit in between the Lewistown Golden Eagles and Butte Central Maroons in the No. 3 spot. Havre is 4-3 in the Central A, while the Maroons are 4-2 and Lewistown is 2-2. And if the Ponies want to maintain their positioning as well as keep moving...

Tonight, the Central A Ponies will host the Lewistown Golden Eagles at the Havre High gymnasium at 7 p.m. And on Saturday the Ponies will take to the road to face the very tough, league leading Butte Central Maroons. In his four years at HHS Salapich has accomplished a lot as a football player, as he has made several runs in the playoffs and even grabbed Second Team All Conference honors as an offensive tackle in his senior season. And as a wrestler, Salapich has been a part of three Class A state championship and three straight Central A divisional championship teams....
