    Tristan

HELENA (AP) — A Montana man whose tearful reluctance to rob a pizza restaurant earned him free food apparently made up the sob story that gained him the clerk's sympathy. David Randall Lacey, 35, entered a Papa John's pizza restaurant on Jan. 22 with a bandanna over his face and gave the clerk a note demanding money, Helena police said. He broke down crying and told the clerk he needed the money to support his wife and children, who were hungry. The clerk made him a large pepperoni pizza and some chicken wings as he waited, a...

    DARLENE SUPERVILLE, Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Two days before President Barack Obama's first trip outside Washington to promote his gun-control proposals, the White House tried to settle a brewing mystery when it released a photo to back his claim to be a skeet shooter. Obama had set inquiring minds spinning when, in an interview with The New Republic magazine, he answered "yes" when asked if he had ever fired a gun. The admission came as a surprise to many. • Congress OKs cliff deal, signaling future fights

    ALAN FRAM, Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Congress' excruciating, extraordinary New Year's Day approval of a compromise averting a prolonged tumble off the fiscal cliff hands President Barack Obama most of the tax boosts on the rich that he campaigned on. It also prevents House Republicans from facing blame for blocking tax cuts for most American households, though most GOP lawmakers parted ways with Speaker John Boehner and opposed the measure. • George Ferguson Column: Get ready for a sports-filled 2013

    George Ferguson

It has been just two days since the calendar turned from 2012 to 2013. But it's never too early to look ahead. And with a great sports year now behind us, it's time to start thinking about what the new year holds. With so many great sporting events coming in Havre, on the Hi-Line and around Montana, I certainly don't need a crystal ball to tell me how much fun the next 12 months is going to be. So, in the last couple of weeks, we've looked back at how amazing the last year...

    Tristan

A Havre woman is working with the National Alliance for Mental Illness and the Center for Mental Health to create a 12-week course for helping friends and relatives of people with mental health issues. • Native Americans, whites should work together

    John Kelleher

An increasing number of people are making comments on stories we post ion http://www.havredailynews.com. Even though we are sometimes upset by the nasty tone of the comments, many commenters make interesting comments and help havredialynews.com become more of a community forum. John Kelleher But some comments upset us, indeed they scare us. That is the increasing number of outright racist comments that people try to post on the website. The racist comments go both ways. Some are anti-white, but most are blatantly anti-Native...

  • Be thankful Havre has a 'thriving, quality arts community'

    Tristan

Editor: Havre is a great place for a lot of reasons. However, this holiday season was proof, once again, that this city has a deep and robust arts community that adds significantly to the livability of this special place. The performances I attended weren't run-of-the-mill events by uninterested people going through the motions until the curtain dropped. While I realize I experienced only a small sampling of the talent on display this Christmastime, what I saw was superb. From the newly formed Havre Community Orchestra to...

  • Montana lawmakers split on New Year tax vote

    Tim Leeds

Although, as President Barack Obama said, neither side of the aisle got everything they wanted as part of the deal, U.S. lawmakers gave a New Year's gift to their constituents, working Tuesday to pass a tax bill that will keep income taxes from going up on 99 percent of Americans. Lawmakers also dealt with issues ranging from alternative energy to the federal farm programs. See related story on Page A8. The holiday vote split the Montana congressional delegation, with Democratic Sens. Max Baucus and Jon Tester voting for the...

    Tim Leeds

Havre Daily News/Lindsay Brown Snow leaves ruts on a driveway off of Badland Road Wednesday morning. A steady snowfall in the region surprised some, with a New Year's Day storm surpassing what most forecasters had expected to be, at most, a few flurries. National Weather Service reported this morning that 2 inches of snow was recorded at its station just west of Havre at the Havre City-County Airport. Some spotters, including just east of Havre, reported more, with as much as 4 inches or greater snowfall on the holiday. The o...

  • Montana judge blocks wolf season closure near Yellowstone

    Matthew Brown

BILLINGS — Wolf hunting and trapping can resume near Yellowstone National Park after a Montana judge on Wednesday blocked the state from shutting down the practice. The restraining order from Judge Nels Swandal allows hunting and trapping to resume in areas east and west of the town of Gardiner. State officials closed the gray wolf season in those areas on Dec. 10 after several wolves collared for research were killed, drawing complaints from wildlife advocates. The closures prompted a lawsuit from sporting groups and a s...

    JOSH LEDERMAN, Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was released from a New York hospital on Wednesday, three days after doctors discovered a blood clot in her head. Clinton's medical team advised her Wednesday evening that she was making good progress on all fronts and said they are confident she will fully recover, said Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines. Doctors had been treating Clinton with blood thinners to dissolve a clot in a vein that runs through the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear. "...
