    Chris Peterson|Updated Apr 5, 2018

There have been a lot of firsts in spring sports so far this season, and none of them have been good. And for the Havre High tennis teams, this weekend will bring another first. The Blue Ponies were set to host their annual Havre Invitational Friday and Saturday at the Bill Vaughey Memorial Tennis Courts, with Belgrade, Hardin, Lewistown, Cut Bank and Conrad in attendance. But with the forecast once again predicting cold and more snow, the tournament has been called off....

    Updated Apr 5, 2018

With the time constraints many families are under, the idea of making and enjoying a home cooked meal as a family may seem overwhelming or even an afterthought some, if not most, days. Would you believe me if I told you that you could have a nutritious meal on the table in as little as 20 minutes? With a pressure cooker, it is possible. Cooking time is reduced by 50 percent or more when using a pressure cooker as compared to conventional cooking methods. Sound too good to be...

  • Letter to the Editor - Thanks for support and interest in Alzheimer's awareness

    Updated Apr 5, 2018

Editor, I’m writing to express my sincere appreciation for the support and interest in our local Alzheimer’s Awareness Event that took place on Feb. 12th. Based on attendance, it is evident that Havre cares as much as I do about the affects of this devastating disease. Sadly, Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States; and of the top 10, it is the only one that can’t be prevented, cured or slowed. Thank you to Havre Daily News for helping me spread the word; there was a lovely article...

  • Letter to the Editor - Assault rifles should be illegal

    Updated Apr 5, 2018

Editor, I am a 10-year-old fourth-grader. For the last year I have been learning how to target shoot with my gun. I have a .22 short rifle that is pink. My dad bought the rifle for me. I have been learning how to be safe with my gun. My dad has been teaching me. I am going to take hunter safety soon. I like target shooting. I might also hunt depending on the animal. I think people should have guns to hunt or target shoot with but not to be able to use them to shoot other people. I don’t think people should have assault r...

  • Looking out my Backdoor: Iguanas and other sentient life

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Apr 5, 2018

That iguana spit on me today. I stood below him, next to the wall in my front-patio courtyard, watching him soak up the sun. He turned his head, looked me in the eye, and spit. Well, that’s a fine howdy-do. No manners. But, maybe, like many a youngster, he had a valid complaint: “She looked at me.” There’s a pair of what I call teen iguanas, middle-sized, who sun at the top of that particular section of wall. You should see them skitter up — or down — a vertical wall. Yet,...

  • Pony softball team still waiting for their first games of 2018

    Chris Peterson|Updated Apr 5, 2018

After a few weeks of practice and after already having their season-opening tournament canceled due to weather, the Havre High softball team will try its hand at competing again this Saturday in Lewistown. Yet, the Central A conference matchup, which is supposed to take place Saturday in Lewistown will only happen if the weather cooperates and right now that seems to be a big if. However, if the game is played, the Ponies and Eagles will get things started around 4 p.m., when...
