  • Hi-Line Living: A slow rise

    Paul Dragu|Updated Nov 4, 2016

Havre's Grateful Bread is not an overnight success. It's more like the slow rise of a loaf of bread made from scratch. Owner Rick Neuwerth's love for baking was kneaded in him a long time ago. "My mom, when I was a kid, used to make the bread for the week for the family. She had six kids," he said, in between sandwich bites after lunch rush. "She'd get to the kitchen table, take two or three big dish pans - like they had before you had kitchen sinks that you wash dishes in, ri...

  • May the horse be with you, literally

    Pam Burke|Updated Nov 4, 2016

It’s been a while since I’ve broke a horse, but it’s time for my youngster to learn to be responsible grownup. I am reminded that progress in training horses isn’t linear. For the first time ever, I’m going to outsource the actual first 30 rides — to a cowboy in the Bear Paws — but I do feel the responsibility to get some of the nonriding parts of the training done before the horse gets shipped out. My work is due, in part, to a sense of diligence and knowledge that the outs...

  • Hess votes to not help people

    Updated Nov 4, 2016

Editor, State Rep. Stephanie Hess, a Havre Republican who is a member of the House Human Services Committee, voted in the last legislative session to kill Gov. Steve Bullock’s plan to expand Medicaid to provide health insurance to 70,000 low-income Montanans. When another Medicaid expansion bill, proposed by Sen. Ed Buttrey, a Great Falls Republican, came up for a vote, she voted no again. Fortunately enough Democrats and Republicans voted for that bill, and it passed and was signed into law. How can anyone be a social w...

  • Vote for Hess in HD 28

    Updated Nov 4, 2016

Editor, It was noted the other day in a letter to the editor that Stephanie Hess is a nice person, but we should vote for someone else. It seems to me that we would want people of good character in public office. Someone who refuses to campaign negatively, listens to her constituents and thoughtfully considers the issues. Stephanie Hess has the qualities I want in a public servant. She has over 40 years of life experience and over 20 years of work experience. Stephanie is smart, kind and loves this town. Vote Stephanie Hess...

  • Your destiny is never in your comfort zone

    Updated Nov 4, 2016

Editor, Step out and do something for yourself and our people. American Indian reservations contribute just under one billion dollars per year to the economy of the state of Montana. I want to keep a large portion of that money home on the reservations by creating our own businesses. When those businesses then buy from each other and turn that dollar over several times in our communities, this is true economic development and independent tribal sovereignty. What is the one small or big business dream you always wanted to...

  • Jacob Bachmeier is the best candidate for HD 28

    Updated Nov 4, 2016

Editor, Last week, I received a political mailer that caught my eye. On the front, a stock photo of a 20-something sitting in a dark basement, holding a videogame controller, sullen face illuminated only by a television. On the back, a grotesquely distorted picture of Jacob Bachmeier, and some key phrases designed to scare older folks away from voting for a Millennial. But if Havre, Montana, and the United States are to prosper, we need the next generation of citizens to start stepping up and taking responsibility in our civi...

    Updated Nov 4, 2016

WASHINGTON (AP) — Get ready for the annual fall ritual of turning back your clocks by one hour, and relish that extra hour of sleep this weekend. Daylight saving time is ending and it’s back to standard time for most people in the United States. The change comes at 2 a.m. local time Sunday, and the shift moves one hour of daylight to the morning from the evening. Residents of Hawaii, most of Arizona and some U.S. territories don’t need to fiddle with their clocks because those places don’t observe daylight saving time. E...

  • Grief Poem Nov. 4, 2016

    Updated Nov 4, 2016

We’re traveling on a real rough road, high hills and valleys low. With crooked roads and mountains, too, we ponder how to go. We know You’re near, we seek You, Lord; we need You by our side. Direct our path; help us to cope, from sorrow we can’t hide. A light blub needs to be replaced; some of us have no clue. Fetch the step stool, removed the bulb; score one for us! Woo hoo! Then there’s the den – his working place, his desk with a deep drawer; Papers are stacked neatly on shelves, some boxes on the floor. Outside, his car!...

  • Hello God, it's me, Mara

    Updated Nov 4, 2016

You know, Lord, sometimes something we see reminds us of something we heard long ago — time, place and author unknown. Seeing deer in the yard brought to mind this story about deer fillings. The author, a retired pastor, couldn’t handle retirement so he volunteered at various places, doing various jobs, because he knew the old folk saying, “Old preachers never die, they just go out to pastor.” He worked an afternoon shift at a retirement center stating that his wife pushed him around in the morning, so now he got to push ot...

  • When situations come up, stay focused on the solution

    Updated Nov 4, 2016

I went to the optometrist the other day for my annual eye exam. During the examination process I was subjected to several different kinds of procedures to test my ability to focus and my ability to stay focused. The whole idea is to determine if I need any type of corrective lens in order to give me better vision. As I began to think about focus with the natural eye, my thoughts shifted to focus with the spiritual eye. In Psalms 62:5-6 David says “My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him. He o...

  • Out Our Way:

    Updated Nov 4, 2016

Mark 9:38-40 Out our way, the roundup is always a big deal - and for this preacher/cowboy it was an especially big deal. Although I am not very good at it, I sure enjoy playing the part. Charlie and I trailered the horses up the ridge as far as we could go, and then unloaded and saddled up. I had just gotten a new pair of leather "batwing" chaps for my birthday and I was really looking forward to wearing them. Aside from the fact we would be riding through hawthorn bushes...

  • Madams under the Big Sky

    Updated Nov 4, 2016

Press release Even when viewed through the misty lens of history, the subject of prostitution tends to tickle people’s preconceptions and prejudices. Women in that profession are typically seen as among the lowest on the social ladder, wholly lacking in morals, virtue and redeeming qualities. But as Montana author Nann Parrett said, “We have to work through our knee-jerk sentiments and get past them, because these women were complex. They had to be, given their circumstances.” Parrett’s book and Farcountry Press’ newest relea...

  • Lights hope to regroup at struggling SOU

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 4, 2016

The Montana State University-Northern Lights are in a funk. And while they have to face their most daunting road trip of the season, for the first time ever, the Lights are playing the Southern Oregon Raiders while they’re in a funk, too. Northern (1-7, 1-7) visits SOU (4-4, 4-5) Saturday afternoon in Ashland, Oregon, where both teams will be looking to break out of difficult losing streaks. The Lights have lost five straight games since beating Carroll College back on S...

  • Griz, Cats both needing a change in momentum

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 4, 2016

It’s not often that the Montana Grizzlies and Montana State Bobcats have things in common. But the two heated rivals, now just three weeks away from the annual Brawl of the Wild, have one big thing in common this week. They’re both trying to get over being blasted by the Eastern Washington Eagles in their last game. The No. 19 Grizzlies (5-3, 2-3) will try and recover from their 35-16 loss last Saturday at EWU by returning to the friendly confines of Washington-Grizzly Sta...

  • MSU-N women back home

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 4, 2016

The Montana State University-Northern Skylights are off to a terrific start this basketball season. But things are starting to get more and more difficult with October now turning to November. The No. 16 Skylights (3-0) have three wins against Canadian CIS schools and put a scare in the Montana Lady Griz Tuesday night. Now however, Northern is ready to embark on a November that will see it play a plethora of NAIA opponents. And that starts with today’s game against the Central...

  • Northern grapplers head to Cowboy Open

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 4, 2016

The Montana State University-Northern Lights got their 2016-17 season off on the right foot with last Saturday’s season-opening win over North Idaho College. Now the fourth-ranked Lights will get their first taste of tournament action. On Saturday, Northern will be in Laramie, Wyoming, for the annual Cowboy Open, a tournament hosted by the NCAA Division I University of Wyoming Cowboys. The tourney will feature a host of DI teams, as well as plenty of other wrestling p...

  • Skylights make one last stand at home

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 4, 2016

To say that the 2016 volleyball season has flown by would be an understatement for the Montana State University-Northern Skylights. But as fast as the season hasgone, one thing has become abundantly clear — the Skylights have gotten better and better with each passing week. And, as the Skylights (4-6, 5-14) approach their final two matches of the regular season, the goal remains just that — to keep getting better. Northern will look to do that when the Skylights host Lew...
