Shooting suspect offered bail reduction for treatment

A Dodson man accused of shooting at tribal police during a high-speed chase may receive chemical dependency treatment.

Travis R. Wing, 19, appeared Monday in state District Court in Havre for a bond reduction hearing. He has been charged in Hill County with felony criminal endangerment and felony vehicle theft. He was charged on Feb. 17 in Phillips County with assaulting an officer, and faces additional federal charges, Hill County Attorney David Rice said.

Defense attorney Jeremy Yellin asked District Judge John Warner to reduce bail from $10,000 to $3,000. Yellin said that Wing's family was prepared to make bail and assume custody of the prisoner.

Rice objected to the request, and instead asked Warner to order Wing to treatment.

"This guy fired 13 rounds at chasing cops," Rice said. "I don't think it's someone we just ought to let loose."

Warner agreed with Rice that the charges probably warranted treatment. He said he would reduce bond if Wing agrees to complete an in-patient treatment program.

Charging documents allege that Wing stole a vehicle in Havre and led sheriff's deputies on a chase through three counties at speeds of 110 mph. He is accused of firing a .380-caliber handgun at Fort Belknap tribal officers and attempting to run over an officer with the stolen car.
