The annual seat belt and safety awareness campaign kicked off Monday in Havre and in communities across the nation.

The National Memorial Day Mobilization/Click It or Ticket Campaign will include Havre Police Department saturation patrols and safety spot checks on Havre's roadways until June 4. In addition, the HELP committee and Safe Children's Coalition will be hosting child restraint workshops, checking for properly buckled children through June 6.

The Hill County Sheriff's Office will also be participating in the campaign. Sheriff Greg Szudera said that deputies will be watching for intoxicated and unsafe drivers.

Havre Police Chief Mike Barthel said the campaign has previously been well-received.

“I'm not aware of any negative response from the public,” he said. “Most of the response indicates people are happy to see we're checking licenses, registration, insurance and seat belts. Most people say if they have to have it, then so should everyone.”

Barthel said most motorists follow the rules when driving.

“The majority of motorists are buckled up when they stop at the safety spots,” he said.
